CAR-DOOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters iPatent No. 654,979, dated July 31, 1900.
Application filed February 16 1900. Serial No. 5,447. N m l-l To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LOUIS A. HOERR, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Oar-Door, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable any one skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
One object of my invention is to provide a car-door which will be simple of construction and at the same time will move freely and not be inclined to bind.
Another object of my invention is to provide means for preventing the door from moving laterally both while in its closed and open positions. 7
My invention consists in the novel features and detailsof construction described in the following specification and pointed out in the claim affixed thereto.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a door made in'accordance with my invention, Figure 1 is an elevation on a reduced scale of a portion of the side of a car to which my door is secured. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through one of the hangers and portions of the door and side of the car adjacent thereto. Fig. 3 is-a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1, thedoor being in its open position.

10 is the side of the car, and 11 the car-door, both being of the usual construction. The car-door 11 has secured to it hangers 12, provided with grooved sheaves 13. The sheaves 13 run upon a track 14, secured to a trackfillet 15 of the usual construction. The track 14 is formed of a substantially L-shaped angle-iron, the upward webor flange of which projects into thegrooves of the sheaves 13, and the horizontally-projecting web or flange of which rests upon the fillet 15 and supports the outer flanges of the sheaves 13. The door 11, as is usual, has the outer portion formed so1id,while the inner portion is simply a framework to strengthen the door. The sheaves 13 and track 14 are so arranged as to bring the outer flanges of the sheaves 13, resting upon the horizontal web or flange of the track 14, directly over the center of gravityof the door. This causes the door to run easily and prevents binding. The inner flanges of the sheaves 13 simply prevent the sheaves from moving off the track laterally.
Adjacent to the lower front corner of the doorway is secured a bracket '17, having an outturned lip 18, which guides the front edge of the door into the bracket 17. Adjacent to the rear lower corner of the doorway is a bracket 19, which cooperates with a wedge 20 on the door 11 to force the rear edge of the door against the side of the car when in its closed position and prevents its lateral movement. 21 is a stop which is secured to the side of the car to limit the rearward movementof the door 11. The stop 21 has an outer lip 22 of the usual form and is also provided with an inner lip 23, so as to leave a U-shaped opening for the reception of the edge of the door. a The lip 23 is preferably slightly wedgeshaped, so as to wedge the door 11 firmly in position.
It will be seen that while my door is very simple of construction it is soarranged as to move easily upon the track, so as not to bind, and also that it is firmly held against lateral movement or rattling, both when in the closed and open positions.
Having fully described my invention, what I claimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
vThe combination with a car, of a sliding door, a hanger carried by said door and provided with a grooved sheave, said sheave having one of its flanges over the center of gravity of said door, a fillet secured to said car,
and an L-shaped track secured to the upper face of said fillet and consisting of a vertical web and a horizontal web, said-vertical web projecting into the groove of said sheave and said horizontal web supporting the flange of said sheave which is over the center of gravity of the door.
