W. E. HEFFNER.
GAR DOOR FASTENER.
Patented Dec. 18, 1888.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VILLIAhI E. HEFFNER, OF HUNTINGDON, PENNSYLVANIA.
CAR-DOOR FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,571, dated December 18, 1888.
Application filed July 21, 1888- Serial No. 280,611. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. HEFFNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huntingdon, in the county of l-Iuntingdon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Door Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in devices for securing or fastening doors; and it relates more particularly to the means employed in securing the sliding doors of bCX or freight cars.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device for use in securing this class of cardoors, which maybe quickly and easily operated, and which, when in a closed or locked position, will serve to hold the door in a closed position, and which will serve to retain the door in a closed position when for any reason the lock proper may have been removed.
To these ends, and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists in the peculiar combinations and in the novel construction, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of the side of a freight-car, in which the door is shown as held in a closed position in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view in which the securing device is shown as released and the door open.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the side of an ordinary freight-car, and B represents -it securely in place.
the sliding door of the same. Secured to the side of the car at a suitable distance from the door-opening, to enable it to serve as a stop for the door when opened to its full extent, is a casting, This casting C is secured to the side of the car by means of screws a, which are passed through lugs b, which project from the edges of the casting.
D is a lever or bar, one end of which is pivotally secured, by means of a suitable pivot, c, within the casting, as shown.
E is a casting which is countersunk into the rear edge of the door, and is provided with a shoulder or extension, F, in the same horizontal plane as that of the lower edge of the bar D when the same has been thrown into a horizontal position. At a point near its free end the bar D is provided upon its outer face with a staple, d, to receive the hasp 6 upon the door.
The operation of the fastening device described is simple, and will be readily understood. \Vhen it is desired to secure the door in a closed position, the bar D is simply turned upon its pivot, so that its free end will rest upon the shoulder F of the casting E, and when in this position the bar will bear directly against the edge of the door, holding The shoulder F serves to prevent the possible displacement of the bar, and when it is desired to open the door it may be done by simply raising the bar into a vertical position, as shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is The combination, with the car and its door, of acasting secured to the side of said car and adapted to form a stop for the door, and a bar pivoted at one end within said casting on a pivot at right angles to the length of the car, and provided at a point near its free end with a staple to receive the eye of a hasp secured to said door, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
\VILLIAM E. HEFFNER.
