SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 664,610, dated December 25, 1900. Application filed March l0 1900. Serial No. 8,203- (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that LEDWARD J OSEPH HEALY, Jr., a resident of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Closet Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in water-closet attachments, and more particularly to that class of devices wherein the seat is automatically turned to an upright position when not in use or when used as a urinal.

The object of the invention is to provide improved means for supportinga water-closet seat and for automatically raising it to an upright position.

With this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View illustrating my improvements. Figs. 2 and'3 are detail views of the seat attachment; and Figs. 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 are views of modified forms of seat-support. ing means.

A represents a water-closet bowl provided on its upper edge with a rearwardly-projecting platform 1, and B B represent two uprights secured on said platform and spaced a suitable distance apart. The uprights B are provided at their upper ends with alined openings for the accommodation of a rod 2, provided with suitable ornamental enlargements 3 at its ends to prevent displacement of the seat 0, as will more fully hereinafter appear. V

The seat 0 is made of any desired shape, but preferably made with angular corners at its rear edge and provided on its under face with strengthening-cleats 4, as shown. At each side of the seat at its rear edge a bracket 5 is secured, and each bracket comprises a strip 6, disposed against the side edge of the seat, and parallel flanges 7 7, disposed against the top and bottom faces of the seat, and said strip and flanges are perforated for the reception of suitable screws or bolts 9 .to secure downward from each strip 6 and is provided with an opening or hearing 11 between its ends for the reception of the rod 2 and is made with an internally-threaded enlargement 12 at its end for the reception of an externallythreaded lug 13 on a Weight 14, thus permitting the weight to be adjustedtoward and away from the seat to regulate the force with which the same is raised and also to permit the respective parts to be separated for convenient packing for shipment.

It will be seen that by employing my improved form of bracket secured to the seat practically all strain of the weight pulling on the bracket will be supported by the flange 7 on the top face of the seat, and thus prevent the annoyance of the weighted bracket pulling away from the seat.

In Fig. 4 the rod 2 is supported in eyebolts 15, which latter are adjustably secured in tubular bearings 16, forming part of wallbrackets 17, by means of set-screws 18, thus permitting the rod to be adjusted toward and away from the wall to assume its correct position over the bowl.

In Fig. 5 the supporting-rod 19 for the seat extends from side wall to side wall of the room and is provided at its ends with bearings 20, secured to the wall to support the rod in place. In this form of my invention the rod 10 is provided with a tubular bearing 21, secured at its inner end to the rod and provided at its outer end with a depending weight 22. It will be seen that this form of bearing is required and used where the bowl is made on one side with an enlarged protruding pipe for seat ventilation, this form being intended for closet-bowls with local vent-horns.

Fig. 6 discloses the supporting-rod 19, provided at points between its ends with sup.- porting-standards 23, secured to the floor.

Various other slight changes might be rethe brackets to the seat. A rod 10 projects sorted to in the general form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my in vention, and hence I would have it under stood that I do not limit myself tothe'precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.

( Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A seat supporting bracketcomprisin g a strip to lie against the edge of the seat, a

flange at each side of said strip having perforati ons for fastening devices to secure said flanges to the faces of the seat, and a weighted arm or rod depending from said bracket.

2. The combination of a seat, brackets, each comprising a strip and flanges at the side edges of said strip, said flanges secured to the respective faces of the seat, and a weighted arm or rod depending from each bracket.

3. The combination with aseat, of a bracket secured to the respective faces of the seat and inclosing a portion thereof, a weighted rod depending from said bracket and means for pivot-ally supporting said rod between its ends.

4. The combination with a bowl and a horizontal rod mounted adjacent thereto, of a cover, two brackets secured to said cover and depending below the same, said depending portions mounted between their ends on said horizontal rod and provided at their lower ends with weights.

5. The combination with a closet-seat, of brackets secured to the seat and inclosing a portion thereof, a rod depending from each bracketand having a bearing. between its ends, a rod disposed in said bearings, means for supporting said rod and weights on the ends of said f rst-mentioned rods.

6. The combination with a closet-bowl hav ing a rearwardly-proj ectin g platform'thereon uprights on said platform and a rod supported thereby, of a seat for said bowl and brackets secured to said seat and inclosing a portion thereof and supported on said rod and weights connected v'v'ithsaid brackets for automatically raising the seat.

7. The combination with a seat and a support therefor, of brackets at the respective side edges of the seat, each of" said brackets comprising a strip lying against the edge of the seat and two flanges lying against and (secured to the respective faces of the seat, a

rodor extension depending from each bracket and mounted between its ends on said support and a weight at the lower end of. each rod or extension.
