ADJUSTABLE SEAT FOR WATER-CLOSETS.
Specification' of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. DoUD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manila, in the Island of Luzon, Philippine Islands, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Seats for Water- Closets g and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to adjustable watercloset seats to be used in connection with the pail system for the removal of night-soil and is of especial value in hot climates.
The object of my invention is to produce a seat of this kind, one that will automatically adjust itself to the height of a receptacle placed under it, that can be readily removed or replaced, and one that affords a sanitary covering for the receptacle when not in use.
With these objects in view my invention consists of the construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side view of my improved device, a part of the pail being broken away and shown in dotted lines, the seat in an elevated position. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same, parts being broken away. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the supporting part with the brackets attached thereto. Figs. 4 and 5 are enlarged views showing details.

i represents the top of the seat, perforated in the usual manner. At each side of the back of the seat is provided a bracket 7c, preferably made of iron, and in the ends of these brackets pins y' are fastened, which pins are adapted to engage in the slots g. Each of the brackets is provided with another pin for a purpose hereinafter to be described.
l represents the cover, which is provided with pins m, which engage in holes in up# wardly-extending portions of the bracket lc.
Fastened to the lower side of the cover Z is an annular rubber gasket or washer o, so that when the cover is closed the whole apparatus is air-tight.
p represents the pail or receptacle, made of any desired material. The lower part of the seat i is provided with an annular projection q, which lits tightly within the top of the pail An annular rubber gasket r is secured to the lower face of the seat fi, so that when the seat and cover are closed the apparatus is airtight. When it is desired to remove the pail p for the purpose of emptying it, the seat and cover are elevated in `a yertical line and then the seat and cover are tilted into the position shown in dotted lines in Figfl and then it is j lowered, whereupon the pins a engage in the 'slots h and hold the seat-cover suspended.
The "advantages of my invention are that it is kept absolutely air-tight when not in use, thus preventing the escape of foul odors; that it will automatically adjust itself to the height of the receptacle placed under it 3 that it may be fastened to the wall or other support at any desired height; that by tilting the entire seat to an angle of forty-'live degrees and giving the same a slight downward motion the seat will be automatically suspended for the removal of the pail or other receptacle; that the seat can readily and easily be removed and replaced by a duplicate, if it is broken or injured, and that it insures cleanliness of the outer surfaces of the receptacle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In an adjustable water-closet seat, the combination of supporting-brackets each provided with a long slot and a short slot, a seat provided with two sets of pins adapted to engage said long slots and said short slots respectively, a cover pivotally mounted on lsaid seat, means for providing an air-tight joint between said cover and said seat, a receptacle and means for providing an air-tight joint between said seat and said receptacle, substantially as described.
