ATENT HARVEY G. RALYA, OF LAPEL, INDIANA.
PUTTY-KNIFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 663,362, dated December 4, icon.
Application filed April 25, 1900. Serial No. 14,332. (No model.)
T0 to whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HARVEY G. RALYA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lapel, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Putty-Knives; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of ,the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a combined puttyknife and brad-drive, and has for its object to facilitate the driving of brads and add to the comfort of the operator when using the device as a putty-knife. V
The invention consists in beveling both sides of the handle, rounding the corner of one edge, and making the opposite edge flat, substantially as hereinafter more fully described, and more particularly pointed outin the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a front edge View. Fig. 3 is a back edge view. Figs. 4 and 5 are cross-sections on the lines at 09 and y y of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a perspective view showing a modification of my invention. Fig. 7 is a View showing my putty-knife with the handle partly broken away resting upon a piece of glass in position for driving a brad.
In the drawings, in which like numerals of reference refer to like parts, 1 is the blade, which has a stock 2, to the sides of which are riveted or otherwise secured the handle-plates 3 3, made of Wood or other suitable material. Beyond the ends of the side pieces are two tips 4 4, which are suitably secured to the stock 2; but these tips may be made in one piece with the part 2. from edge to edge on its side, and one edge 5 is flat, and the opposite edge 6 is preferably oval and its corner rounded.
In using the instrument as a putty-knife the rounded and oval corner fits against the hollow of the operators hand, thereby greatly adding to the comfort of the operator While manipulating the knife. The angles 6 between the llat surface and the beveled edges provide a surface for driving brads, and the bevel is such that when the angle 9 rests against the pane of glass the handle of the instrument will stand at a proper angle to the surface of the glass to provide space for the fingers of the operators hand between the handle and the glass. The flat edge per- Each tip is beveled units the angle 9 to lie close to the glass, and thus prevents the bradusually a flat piece of metalfrom being missed in driving the same.
In Fig. 6 I have shown a modification of my invention which consists in making the instrument entirely of metal and in one piece, as can be readily understood by reference to the drawings. I prefer, however, to have side plates of some lighter material than metal, which gives a hammer balance to the instrument; but the tips Al 4 should be of metal and attached to the stock or madeintegral therewith.
The beveled sides not only center the pressure of the hand upon the handle in the median line thereof, thus avoiding a twisting or torsion act-ion thereon, but they enable the operator to strike to the right or left or top or bottom of a pane by merely giving the instrument a half-turn in the hand. a
I am aware that changes in the form and proportion of the parts herein shown and described as preferred embodiments of my in: vention may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An article of the character described, having its sides beveled, one edge flat and the opposite rounded in a line with the longitudinal axis of the instrument, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. An article of the character described, having its sides beveled, one edge flat and the opposite edge oval in cross-section and rounded at the corner, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. An article of the character described,
comprising in its construction, a blade, a
