Description

fitti-ted States J. S.. ZERBE, OF DELAWARE, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 95,964, dated October 19, 1869.
The Schedule referred to these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
` Toall 'whoml t may concern:
Be it known that I, J. S. ZERBE, of Delaware, in the county of Delaware, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and usef'ul Improvement in Brace-Bit Stocks; and I dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification.
This invention relates t-o a new and useful improvement invarranging bits and other tools and implements for boring and performing other operations in wood and` metal, and consists i n combining together, in a case or stock, boring-bits, screw-driver, counter-sink, dividers, or other articles, which case or stock is placed in the ordinary bit-brace," and held therein, the same as a boring-bit, so that the various tools and articles connected therewith may be revolved and used by ineansgof the brace, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying plate of drawing- Figure l represents the case or stock, with the boring-bolts and other instruments or tools combined therewith according to my invention, the latter being extended for the purpose of showing the purposes for which they are intended.
Figure 2 represents the same, with the bits and other articles closedV or folded within the case.
AFigure 3 is a cross-section of fig. 2, through the line :c x. v
Figure 4. is an end view, showing the method of holding the bits and other articles when either one is extended for use.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the case orstock, which is formed of two parallel bars .connected together at the shank-end, as seen at B, and at the head-end by a round disk formed of two parts, D and E, hinged together as seen in iig. 4, the
part D being made fast to the ends ofthe bars, while the part E may be opened so as to allow either ofthe bitsy or tools contained .in the case, and hinged to the pivot F, tohe extended for use. When such tool is extended, the hinged part 'E is closed and held, as
seen in the drawing, by means of the spring-catch G.
H is the shank, which enters the brace.
I represents dividers or compasses, the legs of which are attached to a head, J, which slides in grooves in the inner-,sides of the bars of the case.
The points of the dividers pass through the part D of the head of the case, as seen at k It, and are separated, as seenin the drawing, and the legs being nearly in contact with each other at the head J, it will be,
seen that as the head is shoved forward or drawrry back, the points will be separated or drawn together, according to the position of the head J.
A scale of inches and fractions of inches is provided on one of the hars ofthe case, as a guide to the movement of the dividers or for other purposes.
L represents the knife of a spokeshave on the side of one of the bars of the case, the Shanks of which extend through the case, and form a stop or rest for the.
bits andvother articles contained in the case.
In the combination presented iu this'examp'le of my inventionm represents a rimmer or counter-sink, for 'operating in metal;
u and o are centre-bits;
j) is a screwdriver; and
r is an extensioncentre-bit formed of a common centre on its shank, and of a lip and spur connected therewith by a fastening-screw, as seen in the drawlng.
S represents the dividers partly extended.
I do not confine myself to the particular articles or tools shownin the drawing. Other articles may be substituted therefor, or added thereto, as may be deemed best.
The advantages of this combination of useful articles in this manner, by which each or either of them-mayl be used as may be required, are many, and must be obvious to all.
Having thus described my invention,
What 'I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let-4 ters Patent, is-
. 'lhe compound tool-stock and receptacle above described, its several part-s being constructed and arranged in the manner set forth.
J. S. ZERBE.
