JOEL MANCHESTER,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Leom Patent N 97,099, dated November 23, 1869.v
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINATION POCKET-RULE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOLMANGHESTER, of thecity, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combination Pocket-Rule; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to nuke and use the sante, reference heilig had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The object of this .invention is to furnish a light, cheap, and convenient article for the pocket, which shall combine within itselt'rarious tools and instru ments, each perfect in its operation; and
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement oi part-s, as hereinafter described.
In the laccompanying drawinglfignre represent-s tl|cpdcket-rule as a try-square.
'Figure 2 is an extended rule for measuring.
Figure 3 represents it as when used as compasscs or dividers.
bimilar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. A is the combination pocket-rule, which is formed of two parts, B and' G. As a rule, it is graduated or marked otf into inches and tract-ions of an inch.
'lhe two parts, B and C, are pivoted together by the screw or rivet (l.
When the marks c ecorrespond, as seen in the drawing, the parts form a right-angleortry-square.
fis a screw-driver bit.
g g are cuttingedges, which work together as scissors, for cutting into cloth for tearing, and for cutting twine, or other articles.
h is a chisel-edge, for cutting ,button-holes, and for other purposes.
i i are points, which, when the rule is partially folded, as seen in iig. 3, ada-pt it for use as compasses for describing circles, or spacing ofi` distances.
When the parts of the ruler are extended, as seen in tig. 2, it is adapted for a rulei` for striking straight li'nes, and when in the position` seen in iig. 3, the parts form an adjustable bevel.
j isa cutting-edge, which, when thc parts are extended, adapts it for a paper-cutter.
The chisel-edge h, being a fine cutting-edge, may be conveniently used as an 'eraser and as a pencil- Sharpener.
It will thus be seen, that in the most compact form, with a weight of only half an ounce, twelve useful tools are combined, each perfect in its operation, and adapted `for'the various uses for which they are intended, each operation being not only necessary, but indispensable, as the occasion for the performance occurs, and which, under ordinary circumstances, would require a great variety of tools, while in this simple combination they are condensed into one instrument weighing buthalf an ounce, which may be carried in thc vest-pocket.
Haring thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Witnesses:
FRANK BLoeKLEY, GEO. W. MABEE.
