SPECIFICATION forming part 05: Letters. Patent No. 608,716, dated August 9, 1898.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BARNET RUBENSTEIN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miners Picks, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to certain improvements in miners picks, designed for the purpose of making said picks less burdensome to carry and also to avoid the necessity of fro-- quently sharpening the same.

To suchcnd the invention consists in certain novel features clearly illustrated and described below.

The drawings show, in Figure 1, a side elevation of the complete pick; in Fig. 2, a horizontal section in line 2 2 of Fig. l; in Fig. 3, an end view of the head of the pick with certain parts broken away to show'the construction thereof, and in Figs. 4 and 5 modified 7 forms of points.

The handle A of the pick is preferably made in three sections consisting each of a wooden outside portion a a, a and an inner metal rod a a a The wooden pieces are preferably joined together to prevent rotation of one with respect to the other and-strengthened at the joints by means of ferrules B B. The sections of the rod are preferably'adapted to be screwed together, the section a being provided with a button a fitted to the hole in the head of the pick and having a flange a extending over the adjacent surface of said head, and the section a being preferably screw-threaded at the end and provided with a wing-nut a This handle may be readily taken apart and carried in short sections, and

It also enables a great variety of points to be carried, which would be impossible were it necessary to carry separate picks for each pair of said points. Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate two of the many points which might be of great use. Fig. 5'is a sort of spadepoint, and Fig. 4is a point which when turned in the plane of the handle may be used as a' hatchet and when turned at right angles thereto as an adz. 1. In a tool of the class described; a jointed handle having a clamping rod extending through the same, said rod being composed of sections not coincident with those of the handle; substantially as'described.

2. In a tool of the class described, a handle composed of sections connected by'joints adapted to prevent rotation of one section upon the other and a clamping-rod extending through the same and made up of the sections not coincident with those in the handle; substantially as described. v i
