DRAFTING IMPLEMENT.
APPLICATION FILED APR. a. 1915.

3mm I HC LEN DENNING JAMES H. CLENDENNING, OF GARY, INDIANA.
DRAF'IING IMPLEMIENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan, 11, Jlfiiti.
Application filed April 3, 1915. Serial No. 18,983.
To all whom it may concern:
Be 1t known that 1, JAMES H. OLENDEN- NlNG, a citizen of the Unlted States, residlng at Gary, in the county of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drafting Implements, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawmos.
This invention relates to certain improvements in drafting implements and has rela tion more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use by templet makers; and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the same may be employed With convenience and facility as a square, a bevel ora gage.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved drafting implement whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use. all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claims.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in top plan of an implement constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, one of the Darts thereof being shown in fragment; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 1- 1 of Fig. 1.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a member adapted to be suitablv secured along an edge of a drafting table or board, although, if preferred, it may be separable therefrom and extending longitudinally of the member is a. groove 2 extending entirely therealong and in which is adapted to be positioned the elongated member or rib 3.
4 denotes an elongated head of predetermined dimensions adapted to overlie the member 1 and ha ing rigidly secured there to at its longitudinal center a blade 5, the
free longitudinal edges of the blade being perpendicularly disposed relative to the inner longitudinal edges of the head, as is believed to be clearly shown in the accompanying drawings, and in order to reinforce the blade 5, I find it of advantage to connect said blade and the head 4 with the diagonally disposed brace member 6. The head a at its longitudinal center is operatively engaged with the elongated member or rib 3 through the medium of a conventional thumb screw 7 adapted to serve as a fulcrum or pivot point in order to permit the requisite adjustment of the blade 5 so as to permit it being used with convenience and facility as a bevel, in av manner which is believed to be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains. I also find it of advantage to employ the supplemental thumb screws 8 of conventional form and adapted to be disposed through the head 4 adjacent its extremities and detachably engageable with the elongated member or rib 3 whereby said blade 5 may be positively maintained in a position perpendicular to said rib or elongated member 3. It will also be self-evident that the clongated member or rib 3 is capable of free sliding movement within the groove 2 whereby the head 4 and the blade 5 may be readily and conveniently adjusted longitudinally of the member 1, as the requirements of practice may require. The blade 5 is also provided with a longitudinally disposed groove 9 adapted to receive the projection 10 carried by the inner face of the fork 11 of the gage 12, said gage having its inner extremity provided with a kerf 1% whereby said gage may be caused to bridge or straddle a longitudinal marginal portion of the blade 5, as is believed to be clearly shown in the accompanying drawings. By this arrangement, it will be readily perceived that the gage 12 is capable of ready movement longitudinally of the blade 5 and in order to maintain said gage against movement, I find it of advantage to dispose through a fork thereof, the thumb screw 15 which is also directed through the projection 10 and adapted to have clamping action upon the base of the groove 9. The outer or projected extremity of the gage has extending therefrom the marking implement 16, for a purpose which is believed to be self-evident.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a drafting implement constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and coinparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the pre cise arrangement and formation of the seteral parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described comprising a member provided with a groove, a rib slidably engaged within said groove, a head pivotally engaged with said rib, a blade projecting laterally from said head, and a diagonally disposed brace member connecting the blade and the head.
A device of the character described comprising a member provided with a groove, a rib slidably engaged within said groove, a head pivotally engaged with said rib, a blade projecting laterally from said head, and means carried by the head coacting with the rib for maintaining the head against movement about its pivot, and detachable means carried by the head disposed at opposite sides of the pivotal connection between the head and rib and coacting with the rib for maintaining the head against movement about its pivot.
3. A device of the character described comprising a blade provided with a groove disposed longitudinally thereof, a gage hav ing a bifurcated extremity whereby the same may straddle a longitudinal marginal portion of the blade, one of the forks of the bifurcation being provided with a projection disposed within the groove of th blade, a marker carried by the gage, and means for holding the gage against movement upon the blade.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afliX my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
