PICK FOR EDGINGMILLSTONES.
No. 592,265. Patented Oct. 26, 1897.
UNITE@ STATES Far-ENT @Errea HEINRICH wARNcKE, or nNnnuRe, GERMANY. y
PICK FOR EDGING MILLVSTONES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 592,265, dated October 26, 189'?.
Y Application filed December 30, 1896- Beral No: 617,450. (No model.)
` To @ZZ whom it mag/concern:-
l the handle.
Beit known that I, HEINRICH WARNCKE, a
subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing. at Lneburg, German Empire, have invented' certain new and useful Improvements in Picks for Edging Millstones; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichA it appeI-tains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in handles for picks, such as are commonly used in edging millstones.
In practice it has been found that an ordinary handle for picks used for the purpose above mentioned is not serviceable, and I have therefore constructed a handle for that purpose which will firmly hold the pick and is both simple and cheap of manufacture.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a front view of the handle. Fig. .2 is a side View showing the pick held in position upon Figs. 3 and 4 represent views of different angles at Which the pick can be held by the handle.
The handle a is Iitted on its squared end b with a hoop or metallic head c, having oppositely-disposed openings or mortisesd. The end of hoop 'c is provided with a thumb pressure-screw having a ball-and-socket connection with a pressure-plate c, Vwhich is serrated on its bottom side in order to have a more rm hold upon the pick.
In order to secure the pick h, which is rhomboidal in shape, a wedge-shaped base c', which may be of the size and angle to suit the degree of angle at which it is desired to set the pick, is introduced into the openings d and butting against the end of the handle a.. The pick is then placed in position, as shown in Fig. 2, and the pressure-screw applied. The wedge-shaped base t' is provided with a plurality of grooves or Inortises k, 7c', and k2 on its bottom side and the end of the handle with a fixed tonguel to fit said grooves in order to preventdisplacement of the base. By shifting the wedge the pick may be moved farther toward the end of the handle, or vice versa, as may be desired.
By increasing the gradient of the base t', as shown in Fig. 3, the pick 71. can be given a greater inclination toward the handle, which is often desirable.
The device represented in Fig. el is designed for those who prefer using heavy or thick picks, as fm, the handle being fitted with a wedge-shaped base n, having but a small slope, this latter arrangement allowing the picks to be used until but a mere stump.
The further advantage of my device is that very thin picks can be used, thus reducing expenses. It has been customary in certain instances to use a pick-holder which would grasp the pickin the center, thus limiting the sharpening of the tool to a certain degree, and great waste of material was the result, whereas with my device the sharpening can continue on both sides as longas a grippingsurface remains for holding the pick.-
I am aware of the fact that the use of a groove and tongue to hold a wedge in shape for an analogous purpose is not new; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination with a removable pick, an inverted-U-shaped metallic head secured to the end of a handle and provided with oppositely-disposed openingsor recesses for the reception of said pick, an adjustable wedgeshaped base having a plurality of grooves Aadapted to engage with a xedtongue, and
a pressure-screw having ball-and-socket connection with a pressure-plate carried by the end of said metallic head, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a removable eyeless pick, a handle provided with an inverted- U-shaped metallic head having oppositelydisposed openings or recesses for the reception of said pick, a'wedge or base which may be of different degrees of slope or inclination to secure the degree of angle desired for the pick in relation to the handle when held by the same, and a pressure-screw carried by theend of said head for the purpose, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
H. WARNCKE. Vitnesses:
CARL O. LANGE, GUs'rAv LEIDENROTH.
