To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ARNOLD I-IETHERING- 'rox Tom), of the city of Winnipeg, in the Province of Manitoba, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tamping-Picks, of which the following is the specification. v

The invention relates to improvements in tamping picksand the object of the invention is to provide a tamping pick having a removable tamping head so that when the head becomes worn and useless through continued use it can be removed and a new one readily substituted, such arrangement avoiding the throwing away or loss of the complete pick as at present occurs when the customary permanent head has been worn sufiiciently to render it useless.

A further object of the invention is to construct a removable tamping head which can be constructed at small cost, applied on the pick with facility and when applied will have little tendency to work loose under the continued jarring action to which it is subjected.

lVith the above objects in view the invention consists essentially in the arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter more particularly described and later pointed out in the appended claim.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the improved tamping head applied on the pick. Fig. 2 represents an enlarged detailed longitudinal sectional view through the tamping head and a portion of the pick.

In the drawing like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.

1 represents a pick suitably mounted on a pick handle 2 and provided as is customary with two oppositely extending members 3 and 4, the member 4 being brought to a point as indicated at 5.

I might here explain that the usual tamping pick has the general appearance of the pick shown but it is supplied with a permanent or integral tamping head similar in appearance to the removable tamping head 6 which I provide.

It is obvious that when a permanent or integral tamping head is used that once the tamping head is worn down through constant usage the pick becomes useless for tamping purposes. On construction or other such large work the worn picks are generally committed to the scrap heap with the result that there is considerable loss which could be avoided if the tamping head were removable. With this in view I have constructed the tamping head shown in the drawing and as now described. It comprlses a more or less rectangular striking body 6* fitted on the one side with a pair of similar evenly spaced extending side arms 6 and 6 which are arranged to receive between them a tongue 7 projecting from the ends of the arm 3 of the pick. Right angled shoulders 7 and 7 2 are located at the base of the tongue and the ends of the arms butt tightly against these shoulders when the head is applied. The extending end of the tongue is constructed with a slightly tapering end 7 X which is designed to butt snugly against the body of the tamping head appearing between the arms. The tongue and arms are fitted with upper and lower cross openings 8 and 9 designed to register when the tamping head is applied on the pick. These openings receive cross bolts 10 and 11 which are utilized to fasten the head to the pick. The bolts are provided with removable nuts 12.

From the above description it will be seen that once the substantially rectangular head 6 has been sufiiciently worn to render it useless the said head can be removed by undoing the nuts and withdrawing the bolts. A new head can then be substituted and fastened again on the end of the pick. There is accordingly little loss occasioned.

I wish it to be noticed that the shoulders take considerable of the jar from the bolts as does also the forward end of the tongue which is not inclined sufficiently to render it useless for this purpose. I wish to point out also that by inclining the forward end of the tongue as shown any lateral thrust brought on the tamping head when tamping is taken up in the tongue and not in the lower bolt.
