Be it known that I, DAVID JoNEs AN- DREWS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brighton, in the county of Jefferson and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miners Picks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to picks for use of miners and others; and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide means for securing to the head of the pick a point or points of different lengths or structures or for renewing a point that has become injured or broken.
Another object is to provide a pick in which the point may be readily detached for the purpose of attaching to the pick-head a point of different contour or construction.
These and other objects are attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of a pick made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the headed pick. Fig. 3 is a side view of one of the-detachable points or picks, and Fig. 4 is a horizontal section, taken centrally through the pick near the fastening-bolt for securing the pick-point to the head of the pick.
Referring to the drawings for a more particular description of my invention, the numeral 1 designates the head of the pick, provided with a handle-socket 2, and'at the opposite ends thereof having a recessed portion 3, provided witha shoulder 4 and a bolt-hole 5 extending therethrough. Extending longitudinal to the head is a bore or socket 6, said bore or socket intersecting the bolt-hole 5. The detachable point 7 is provided with a round shank 8 and a flat attaching-flange 9, said flange and shank being provided with threaded alining apertures 10 11, which when the shank is placed within the socket and the end of the attaching-flange abuts against the shoulder 4 said alining apertures register with the threaded bolt-hole 5 to accommodate a bolt 12, which passes through the flange, the shank, and the recessed portion of the pick-head to hold said point firmly in position and permit it to be removed freely at will for the purpose of securing another point thereto whenever required. The head of the bolt 12 is countersunk flush with the surface of the pick-point, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that the means employed for securing the point to the head of the pick are very eflicient, strong, and durable and that the point of the pick is prevented from turning and may be quickly replaced by a new point ora point of different length or construction at any time.
Various changes in the form,'proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the princi-' pie or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described pick having a head provided with recessed ends 3, and having a bolt-hole 5 in said ends, and a longitudinal bore 6 extending beyond the recess in said ends, a detachable point 7 having a round shank 8 through which a hole 10 extends, said shank adapted to fit the bore 6 in the head, and said point having a flat attachingflange 9 provided with a bolt-hole 11, said flange adapted to engage the recess and lie flush with the under surface of said head, and a threaded bolt 12, passed through the hole 11 in the flange, through the hole 10 in the shank and through the hole 5 in the recessed ends of the head, said bolt being countersunk in said flange, substantially as described.
