JAMES INGELLS, ,OI HESPERIA, MICHIGAN.
STONE-BOAT.
$PECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 641,113, dated January 9, 1900. Application filed June 6, 1899. Serial No. 719 ,595. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES INGELLS a citi zen of the United States, residing at Hesperia, in the county of N ewaygo and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvement-s in'Stone-Boats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, such as will en able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in stone-boats; and its object is to provide a device that is simple in construction and can be readily mounted upon wheels.
Heretofore stone-boats have been provided with wooden heads formed of either curved or hewn timber, but such construction has been found unsatisfactory.
My invention consists in combining a boathead with the body of the boat, composed of straight boards. Cranks-shaped axles are provided, one on either side of the boat, to receive carrying-wheels. These axles are adjust-able and may be readily locked in place when it is desired to throw the weight of the load upon the wheels.
The invention also consists in the further novel constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which- Figure- 1 is a perspective view of my improved stone-boat. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4is a detail view of an axle detached.
Fig. 5 is a similar view of the head.
Referring to said figures by letters of reference, A is the body of the boat, formed of suitable straight timbers held togetherin any desired manner and bolted at one end to the lower edge of a metallic head 13. Said head is curved upwardly and is preferably cast in one piece and is provided with flanges b, which serve to strengthen the head. The head is also provided with a slot B, likewise flanged, as shown.
The body A is provided with side rails A, as shown, and at a point intermediate the length of the body, to each side thereof, are
journals D, each adapted to receive a crankshaped axle E. One section F of each of said axles bears within a journal and is provided with a threaded end f, adapted to receive a nut f. The intermediate section G of the axle is preferably enlarged, as at g, at its point of junction with the portion F, said enlarged portion provided with sockets for the reception of teeth or prongs D, formed on or secured to the outer surface of each of the journals D. The wheels I are mounted upon the outer portion H of each of the axles and. may be held thereon in any suitable manner.
Pivotally' secured to the upper edge of the boat-head Bis atongue J, provided with trees, as shown, and also connected, preferably by means of a chain, directly to the body of the boat. Said chain is secured at one end to the tongue and passes through the opening B in the head B, its opposite end being secured to a T-iron of the peculiar construction shown and suitably bolted to the body. By this construction all undue strain is removed from the head and is transmitted directly to the body A.
When it is desired to adjust the wheels so that they will support the boat, the boltsf are loosened and the axles withdrawn from their journals until their teeth D are'released from engagement therewith. The axle is then turned to proper position and the nut f screwed thereon, causing the teeth to again engage the notches, and thereby lock the axle in position.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is l 1. In a stone-boat, the combination of the body, the upwardly-curved and flanged head secured thereto and formed of onepiece, a tongue pivotally secured to the upper end of the head and a direct chain connection be-= tween the tongue and boat-body, substanclamping said teeth in their sockets, substantially as described. tially as described. 1o
2. In a stone-boat, the combination with In testimony whereof I afiix my signature the body and head, of the journals, crankin presence of two witnesses. 5 shaped axles mounted therein, the interme- JAMES INGELLS.
diate portion of each of said axles enlarged Witnesses: and socketed, teeth on said journals adapted HELEN INGELLS,
to engage With said sockets and means for GERTRUDE INGELLS.
