IMPROVEMENT IN WAGON-BEACHES @6132 .gdgetiile refemh in in llltSt gems fintent rmh mating ind 0f flge smut.-
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Beit known that I, ZENAS PLUMB, of De Witt, in the county of Clinton, and State of Iowa, have invented a, new and useful Improvement in Wagon-Reach; and I do hereby declare that the followingjs a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a top view of my improved swivel wagon-reach connected with a front axle.
Figure 2 is a. longitudinal sectional view of the same, showing the mode of connecting the swivel.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in the construction of a wagon-reach, either single or double, and consists in applying a swivel to it in such a manner that the fore and hind axles of a wagon or other vehicle can rock out of level independently of each other, when either wheeli'alls into a rut or strikes a stone or other obstruction, whereby all twisting or wrenching of the reach is prevented, and injury theme is avoided. 1
A represents the front axle of a wagon, to which is attached the double reach B, formed and connected with both axles, and with the D plate G, in the usual way. But the reach is made in two parts, connected by a. swivel-joint, and in the case of a double reach, as shown in the drawing. The forward part of the reach has a screw-bolt, a, secured in the end, and projecting therefrom to pass through the hollow end of the back part of the reach in which the bolt fits, so that it can turn freely, while it is secured by a nut, a, in the forkof the reach. A single reach may be made in two parts, connected by a swivel-joint in a similar manner.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 7 Constructing a wagon-reach in two parts, connected by a swivel-joint, substantially as and for the purpose described. i The above specification of my invention sign ed by me this first day of August, 1867.
