UNITED STAE ENT OFFICE.
HARRY B. WING, OF CRESTED BUTTE, COLORADO.
HANDLE ATTACHMENT.
Application filed August 28, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY B. \VING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Crested Butte, in the county of Gumiison and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Handle Attachments, of which the following is specification.
My present invention has to do with handle fastenings of the wedge type; and it has for its object to provide a wedge fastening that is simple and inexpensive in construction, susceptible of ready application without the employment of skilled labor, and calculated to effectually fasten a hammer head or other tool on its wooden handle in such manner that there is no liability of the head or tool flying off the handle no matter what the usage to which the hammer or other tool is subjected.
lVith the foregoing in mind, the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claim when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a view illustrative of the mode of applying my novel fastening.
Fig. 2 is a view, partly in section and partly in elevation, showing the fastening as completely applied.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. l but taken at right angles to the latter.
Fig. 4: is an edge elevation of the wedge member per 86 of the fastening.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the views of the drawings.
By Way of example I illustrate my novel fastening in conjunction with a hammer having a head 1 and a wooden handle 2.
The wedge fastening is formed of metal suitable to its purpose, and comprises a wedge member 3 and a locking member 4.
As clearly illustrated the wedge member 3 is oblong in cross-section, is tapered toward its inner end, is provided on its long sides, at intermediate points in the length thereof, with lateral teeth 5, and is also provided with a longitudinal-central bore 6. This bore 6. is reduced from an intermediate point of its length to the inner end of the wedge member 3, as indicated by 6, so as to form abutments 7 in the bore, for a purpose hereinafter set forth.
T be looking member l is in the form Specification of Letters Patent.

of a rod, and has its inner portion bifurcated, as indicated by 8, to form tangs 9 and also has the free ends of the said tangs beveled or sharpened, as indicated by 10.
In the practicalapplication and use of my novel fastening, the hammer head 1 is positioned on the handle 2 in the ordinary, well-known manner, after which a slot is formed in the fastened end of the handle, said slot extending in the direction of the length of the hammer head, and being of a size commensurate with that of the wedge member 3. The wedge member 3 is then inserted in said slot and driven homez'. 6., until its large end is flush with the fastened end of the handle. Vith this done, the locking member 4: is driven downwardly in the bore 6 of the wedge member, and into the wood of the handle beyond the inner end of said wedge member. Incidental to this latter step of the operation, it will be manifest that when the inner end of the locking member engages the abutments 7 of the, bore 6 in the wedge member 3, which wedge member is also bifurcated as indicated by 11 to form tangs 12, the said tangs 12 will be forced outwardly with the result that the lateral teeth 5 will be embedded their full length in the wood of the handle so as to preclude endwise displacement of the wedge member from the handle, and, at the same time, thehandle portion will be considerably expanded in the eyeof the hammer head 1 or other tool so that there is absolutely no liability of the hammer head flying off the handle. \Vhen the tangs 9 of the rod-like locking member pass out of the inner end of the wedge memher, the said tangs will be caused to spread apart by the wood of the handle, and hence will form efficient anchors, well adapted to prevent casual displacement of the locking member from the wedge member and the handle, and at the same time assist in securing the wedge member against accidental movement in the handle, so that the efficiency of the wedge member is not impaired even after a long period of use.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In a handle fastening, the combination of a tool having an eye, a wooden handle having a portion disposed in said eye, a wedge member, of oblong form in cross-section, embedded in the portion of the handle in if) h s the eye and having lateral teeth on its long sides and also having a longitudinal-central bore extending throughout its length and provided With intermediate abutments and a reduced portion extending inwardly from said abutments; said Wedge member being bifurcated from its inner end to a point outwardly beyond the said lateral teeth, and a locking member occupying the said bore of the Wedge member and having a bifurcated inner portion and also having the tangs of said bifurcated portion spread apart beyond the inner end of the Wedge member, whereby they form anchors in the handle to lock the Whole; the said locking member throughout its length being of a size in cross-section to snugly fit the outer portion of the bore in the Wedge member, whereby said locking member serves as it passes through the reduced or contracted portion of the bore to expand the wedge.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
