WALL-SOCKET AND BOLT.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept, 21,1915.
Application filed January 8, 1914.. Serial No. 811,109. 7
To all whom it may concern 7 Be it known that I, WILBERT C. FAWKES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Portland, in the county of Multnomah, State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvement in W'alh Sockets and Bolts, of which the following is a specification- My invention relates to" devices for fastening what is known as life belts to the sides of windows on the exterior of the building so as to render the cleaning of the windows a safe occupation.
My invention has forits object to provide a socket for the strap bolts which will not work loose in service by reason of being improperly seated in the material in which it is embedded; and to this end I make my socket with a plurality of laterally and radially expans'ible anchor portions which will become seated in the material in which embedded insuchwise as tohold the socket against lateral movement in any direction.
My invention further has for its object the providing of a socket which is simple and cheap to manufacture, but at the same time so constructing the parts that the socket will be securely wedgedin place. In one type of my invention 1 accomplish the last mentioned result by using a wedge element which will bite itself fast as it were, and thus be held against any return movement. V Other specific features of my invention willbe more readily understood from the description thereof hereinafter contained. p In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 shows a portion of the exterior of a window with a life belt secured in place at its ends asin service; Fig. 2 shows alongitudinal sectional view explanatory of one type of my invention; the socket in this view being shown'as permanently embedded in the material in which it'is to be affixed; Fig. 3 is a front elevation of my invention of the type shown in Fig. 2, and shows the socket of my invention as in placeand the bolt secured in such'socket Fig. 4 is an inner end view of the type of socket shown in Fig. 2, looking in the direction pointed by the arrow 4 in Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is an outer end view of the same socket, thus looking at the same in the direction pointed by the arrow 5 in Fig. 2; ig. 6 is a side elevation of the type of socket shown in Fig. 2, the dotted lines showing the interior bore thereof, also the locking rib and the wedge element; Figs.
.7 and 8 show modifications inthe construcsocket-head, and the screw-bolt having a.
conical end serving the purposes of a wedge; Fig. 10 is a. plan or top view of the lower part of the last mentioned type of socket; and Fig. 11 is an elevation ofthe nut 11.
Describing in the first instance the type of my invention shown in Figs. 2 to 6 inclusive: The socket, a, is longitudinally divided into parts a, a along the line b, and each of said parts is split at 0, OZ, thus dividing the shank portions of the socket into laterally and radially expansible anchor portions, '6, f, g, it, whereby the'socket, when embedded in the material, 2', is rigidly held against lateral movement in any direction, and thus cannot be wiggled loose in service; The socket-head of the socket j is provided with an interior transverse locking. rib is,
, having a straight face corresponding to the ]wedge 12. is driven into place by a suitable punching instrument and hammer, and by reason of its described construction its portion n will bite itself into the interior faces of the bore m, and thus be securely held against return movement. The bolt 0 is made with a stud 79 of circular cross-section and has a segmental locking flange 9 representing substantially that portion of the circle described by the cavity of the socket -posely detached therefrom.
head j, which is supplemental to the locking rib is. It will benoted that the latter is formed at the bottom of the cavity ofthe socket head. Thus the bolt 0 can only be inserted in the socket head when its shank 0 is lifted into-vertical position; and likewise the bolt cannot be removed otherwise than in that position. In this way the bolto is permitted a rotary movement of substantiall of a circle and cannot become-- detached from the socket except when pur The bolt 0 is formed with an eye 0 for receiving the snap hooks 1" or the ends of the strap 8. i
The construction of my invention in the tween the two parts of the socket head w,
as shown in Fig. '9. in the nut 2/ is threaded a-bolt to having an eye w. The end w of said bolt is made of conical form so asto operate like the wedge element n to force the split anchor-members of the shank of the socket laterally and radially apart, in
order to firmly secure the socket in place in the material in which embedded.
in the last described type of my. invention, the socket could be removed from the cavity of the material in which it is placed, while in the first described types of my invention the socket would be irremovable; and this, in some instances, is very desirable, preventingftamperin'g with the socket, which would introduce an element of unsafety. The opposedfacesoi" the socket parts, 0/, a along their dividing line Z), are respectively provided with wedge-shaped lugs 00 and corre sponding cavities y, for holding these socket parts against longitudinal movement upon each other.
I claim:
.1. In a device of the character described,
a longitudinally divided socket comprising a socket-head and a shank, the shank part of eachmember being split to provide laterally ekpansible anchor portions; one part of the socket being provided with a wedge shaped lug (or lugs) and the other with a corresponding cavity (or cavities) to hold the socket parts against longitudinal movement upon each other; and a conical wedge element inserted in the socket.
2. In a device 'ofthe character described, a longitudinallydivided socket comprising a socket-head and a shank, the'shank part of each member being split to provide laterally eXpansible anchor portions; means for lOcking the parts of the socket against longitudinal movement upon each other; and a conical wedge element inserted in the socket and made ofharder material than the socket.
3. In a device of the character described, a longitudinally divided socket comprising a socket-head and a shank, the shank part of "each member being split to provide laterally expansible anchor portions; means for looking the parts of the socket against longitudinal movement upon each other; and a conical wedge element inserted in the socket and whose sides are of diilerent inclination than that o1 the bore of the socket.
4i. In a'device of the character described, a longitudinally divided socket comprising a socket-head and a shank, the shank part of each member being split to providelaterally expansible anchor portions; means for lockingthe parts of the socket against longitudinal movement upon each other; a conical wedge element inserted in the socket; anda bolt having locking engagement with the socket head and only removable therefrom when lifted to vertical position.
5. In a device of"the'characterdescribed, a longitudinally divided socket comprising a socket-head andfaf shanhthe shankpart -of each member being split 'to provide laterally QXPzlllSlblG anchor portions; means for locking the parts of the socket againstlongitudinal movement upon each other; the shank having a tapering bore; a wedgefelement comprising a nut non-rotatably heldin' the socket-head, and a screw-bolt threaded in such nut and formed with a conical wedgeend for expanding the anchorp'ortions "of the shank of the socket by'the inWa-rdmovement of the screw bolt. i
6. Ina device of the character described, a longitudinally dividedsocket comprising a socket-head and a shank, the shank part of each member being split to provide laterally expansi'ble anchor portions; means for looking the parts of the socket against longitudinal movement upon each other; a conical wedge element inserted in the socket; the socket head formed with an interior transverse locking rib havinga straight, face corresponding to a chord oi the circle described by the cross section of the cavity of the a longitudinally divided socket comprising a socket-head and a locking-bolt formed With socket-head and shank, a conical Wedge elea segmental locking flange representing subment inserted in the socket; the socket-head stantially the remaining area of said'circle. 10
