Description
T. W. GALVERT.
NUT LOCK.
(No Model.)
Patentd Deo. 7
. I @Manuf UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS W. CALVERT, OF GUTHRIE, OKLAHOMA TERRITORY.
NUT-Lock.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,854, dated December 7, 1897.
Application filed July 28, 1897. Serial No. 646,241. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. CALVERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Guthrie, in the county of Logan and Territory of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
.My invention relates to a novel form of nut-lock, and the object is to provide a simple, cheap, and effective device of this class.
To this end the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the device, as Willbe hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference-characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure l is a longitudinal section of my improved nut-lock. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the nut locked on the bolt. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the locking-key removed from the bolt.
l represents the bolt, the threaded end of which is provided with a slot 2, the bottom or inner end of which terminates in a V-V shaped tongue 3.
4 represents the nut, which engages the threaded end of the bolt in the usual manner.
5 represents the lockingkey, and it is wedge-shaped and of such dimensions as to be driven into the slot 2 in the bolt and force the walls apart to bind on the contiguous threaded faces of the nut, and its inner end is formed with a V-. shaped notch 6, of a somewhat more acute angular shape than thel tongue 3, the apexof which terminates in a longitudinal slot or slit 7. The outer parallel edges 8 8 of this key are V- shaped, as shown, and its head 9 is provided with a transverse vorifice l0.
In practice the nut is rst screwed home in the usual manner and the key inserted in the slot in the bolt and driven in. This causes the notch 6 in the forward end of the key to engage the tongue 3, Which separates the bifurcated end of the key, causing its edges 8 8 to bite into the threads of the nut and lock it in placeon the bolt. When it is desired to withdraw the key, the pointed end of a suitable tool is inserted in the orifice l0 in the outer end of the key, so as to pry it out of the slot in the bolt;
Although I have specically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my invention, I d'0 not desire to be conined to the same, as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,
is- Y An improved nut-lock comprising the bolt 1, formed lwith the open-ended slot 2, eXtending diametrically across its threaded end and terminating at the V-shaped tongue 3, the nut 4, adapted to engage the threaded end of said bolt, in combination with the lockingkey 5, provided with the V- shaped notch 6 terminating in the longitudinal slit 7, the longitudinal parallel beveled edges 8, 8, and the integral solid head 9, provided with the transverse orifice 10, substantially as. shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
H. I-I. HAGAN, GEO. W. LANMAN.
