VINCENT W. BAKER, OF PLAINFIELD, NEW JERSEY.
DENTAL H EAD-REST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 662,387, dated November 27, 1900'.
Application filed June '7, 1900- To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, VINCENT W. BAKER, a
citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Plainfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and tiseful Improvement in Dental Head- Rests, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in dental head-rests,and has for its object to provide the head-rest attachment of a dental chair with an adjustable supplementary rest adapted to support the neck of the patient.
The invention consists in mounting a curved padded rest on a threadedstem with a flattened edge and loosely fitting said stem through an aperture in the head-rest post, which is also provided with a flattened edge to fit the flattened edge of the stem and prevent said stem from turning, and finally threading a knurled knob on the rear end of the stem and seating said knob in a socket on the head-rest post by means of set-screws threaded through the socket and playing in an annular groove of the knob.
My invention further consists in the novel details of construction and combination of parts to be clearly described in the following specification, and fully set forth in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which like characters of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a dental chair, showing my improved rest in position. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view through the head-rest post and knob, showing the neckrest in top elevation; and Fig. 3 is a sectional View on the line a: a: of Fig. 2.
In the drawings, 1 represents the back of an ordinary dental chair, and 2 the usual headrest, mounted thereon by means of the headrest post 3. Acurved padded plate 4. is carried on a threaded stem 5, which has its rear end freely fitting within an aperture through the head-rest post 3, just above the chair-back 1, and has its lower flattened edge 6 bearing on the corresponding flattened edge 7 of the aperture to prevent rotation of the stem. A knurled knob 8 is seated in a socket 9 on the Serial No. 19,448. (No model.)
rear end of the head-rest post 8, is threaded on the stem 5, and is retained in its position by means of set-screws 10, threaded through the socket 9, with their inner ends sliding in an annular groove 11 of the knurled knob S.
From the foregoing it will be seen that when my improved device is in position on adental chair the neck-rest pad may be adjusted forward or rearward by simply turning knob 8, which then moves stem 5 in the direction desired by reason of the above-described confinements and limitations to movements of knob 8 and stem 5.
Having fully described myinvention, What I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a head-rest and post, a neck-rest, a threaded stem secured thereto and loosely fitted to the head-rest post so as to be capable of sliding, means for preventing rotation of the threaded stem and a knob threaded on the stem and confined in position on the head-rest post, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a head rest and post, a neck-rest, a threaded stein secured thereto and'loosely fitted to the head-rest post so as to be-capable of sliding, means for preventing rotation of the threaded stem, a knob threaded on the stem, a socket on the headrest post, and set-screws threaded in the socket and bearing in an annulargroove of the knob, substantially as described.
3. In combination with a head-rest and post, a neck-rest, a threaded stem secured thereto and loosely fitted through an aperture in the head-rest post, said aperture and stem having corresponding flattened sides fitting together to prevent rotation of the stem, a socket on the head-rest post, a knob threaded on the stem and seatedin the socket, and set-screws threaded in the socket and ex- I tending within an an nulargroove of the knob,
substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
VINCENT W. BAKER.
Witnesses:
JOHN H. VAN WINKLE, ASA F. RANDOLPH.
