NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT W. SHARP, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
PORTABLE HEAD-REST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,380, dated May 31,
Application filed May 3, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, ROBERT W. SHARP, of Brooklyn, in the countyof Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Device for Attaching the Head-Rest to a Chair, of which the following is a specification.
The construction and manner of use will be particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the apparatus applied to a chair fora head-rest. Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views.
Similar letters of rel'erem-e indicate corre- Q sponding parts.
A is a tubular rod of metal fitted atone end with side lugs, to a, that form a fork adapted for sitting over the edge of the chair seat or round, and in the lower lug, a, is tapped a clamping-screw, b.
c is a rod adapted for sliding into tube A, and fitted with a loose collar, (1, that has a crossaperture (see Fig. 2) for receiving a hook, e.
d is a clamping-screw in collar (1 for clamping the collar on rod 0 in any position to which it may be moved, and a is a clamping-screw in tube A for securing the rod 0.
On the upper end of rod 0 is attached a tubular socket-piece, l, in which is fitted a sliderod, f, clamped by a screw, 0, which rod f is formed with a concave socket (see Fig. 3) for receiving a ball-headed screw, 9, having a nut, g, and the head of screw 9 is apertured for the insertion of a rod, i, that carries the head- (No model.)
rest It. The rest 70 is connected to the rod 1' by a knuckle-joint, the cross-pin of which is asetscrew, 70, so that the rest 70 may be clamped in the desired position. The rest is is to be made of suitable size and shape and upholstered.
In use the rod A will be clamped to the seat of a chair by means of the lugs to and screw 1), as shown in Fig. 1, the rod 0 adjusted 'and clamped by screw a, and the hook e caught upon the back of the chair and clamped by screw 61. The apparatus will thus be securely held at the back of the chair as placed. The rod f permits further vertical adjustment ot the rest, and the. rod t',witl1 the ball-and-socket connection and hinged rest k, allows adjustment to the exact position required.
I am aware that a head-rest has been secured adjustably to a bar having a groove in which slides the lower bar, whose lowerend is curved and extends under the chair; but
What I claim as new and of my invention is- The tubular rod A, having lugs a a at the lower end, and a rod, 0, adjustably secured in said tube by a screw, a, in combination with the hook e, cross-apertured loose collar (1, and the screws 1) d, as and for the purpose specified.
ROB'I. Vt. SHARP.
