GEORGE W. ARCHER, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE ARCHER MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
H EAD-REST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 518,771, dated April 24, 1894.
v Application filed October 14, 1891- Serial No. 408,712- (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. ARCHER, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head-Rests; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of thisspecification, and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
My present invention relates to head rests particularly adapted for use on barbers, dentists and similar chairs and has for its objects to provide a rest that can be adapted to accommodate with comfort,,persons having long orshort necks and also to provide one thatis capable of easy adjustment and is simple in construction.
Heretofore the simple class of head rests have usually been capable of adjustment either vertically alone or backward and forward, in such a way that a person with a short thick neck would either have to reach so far back to place his head on the rest as to render him uncomfortable or else two adj ustments would have to be made of the rest, which would have to be of a more or less complicated character, and to remedy these defects and produce a simple and cheap rest, my invention consists in certain improvements in construction and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter fully described and the novel features pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
In the drawings: Figurel is aside view of a head rest constructed in accordance with myinvention applied toa barbers chair; Fig. 2 a vertical sectional view of the same; Fig.
.3 across-sectionalview on the line 0ca' of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 a rear view of the head rest.
Similar reference numerals in the several figures denote similar parts.
1 indicates a portion of the back of a barbers chair provided with a socket or recess in which the stem or support 2 of the head rest enters and in which it may be adjusted vertically by the manipulation of a catch 3. co-operating with ratchet teeth 4 on the back of said stem in the usual or any preferred manner. This stem 2 is preferably made of a suitable plate or casting having its upper end curved outward as shown, forming a surface or support for the head rest proper or pad 5 and said curved portion is preferably provided with a slot 6 for the passage of a projection 7 on the back of a casting 8 secured to the back of pad 5. This casting has on both sides projections 9 which bear on the upper curved part of the stem. Secured to the outer end of the projection 7 by means of a pin 10, is a slotted cam piece 11, the eccentric portions engaging the under side of the 1 when the operator desires to move it on the stem, he grasps the hooked end of the clamp and raises it to the position in dotted lines Fig. 2 releasing the clamp, the hooked end then serving as a handle by which to adjust the rest to the position desired when it may be again secured by pressing the clamp down. The clamp also serving as a manipulating handle enables the operator to accomplish the desired adjustments with one hand only.
The curved pad support or stem insures the pad or rest being moved downward v and forward at the same time so that it can be moved to the position where it will sustain the persons head in the most comfortable position, and this is particularly desirable with persons having short necks, who can use this rest with perfect ease, not being required to bend their heads way back when the rest is in lowest position.
This head rest is exceedingly simpleand effective and can be made cheaply.
The vertical adjustment of the stem or support may be accomplished in the manner shown by the catch 3 or any other means desired.
I claim as my inventionl. In a head rest the combination with the supporting stem having the rearwardly curved and slotted upper portion, of the rest or pad bearing on the upper side thereof and having the extension passing through the slot and the eccentric clamp for engaging the under side of the stem pivoted on said extension on a pivot extending transversely of they stem and having the operating handle, substantially as described.
2. In a head rest the combination with the supporting stem having the rearwardly curved 5 and slotted upper portion, of the rest or pad having the two projections engaging the upper side of said curved part on each side of the slot and the extension passing through the slot, and the eccentric clamppivoted on said extension on a pivot extending trans- IO versely of the stem and having the operating handle, substantially as described.
