To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ISAIAH D. CRISPELL, of \Vest Stockbridge, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Head-Rest for Chairs, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to improvements in head-rests for chairs, and is specially adapted for use in connection with dentists or barhers chairs; and the object of my invention is to produce a head-rest which will be pivoted upon the chair in such a manner that the operator may manipulate the head-rest in such a manner as to bring the head of the customer or patient, as the case may be, into a desired position Without inconvenience.

To this end my invention consists in cer tain features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a chair provided with my attachment, the frame of the chair-back being shown in section. Fig. 2 is an enlarged rear elevation of the head-rest removed from the chair. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3 2-3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a vertical section on theline 4 4 of Fig.

The head-rest embodying my invention may be attached to any desired form of chair, and in the accompanying drawings I have shown it applied to a chair A, of the usual construction. usual manner upon its upper surface, and is provided with a suitable cushion to make it easy to the head.

Fixed to the under surface of the head-rest B, so as to extend transversely across the same, is a plate I), having upon the forward portion thereof depending knuckles b and having arranged transversely across its rear end the depending knuckles o The block 0 is provided with the usual standards 0, which are inserted in recesses of the chairback in the usual manner, and the block 0 is also providedwith the upwardly extending The head-rest B is concaved in the knuckles c, which correspond in height to the knuckles b of the plate I), the knuckles band 0 being pivoted together by a suitable rod or pintle d,whichproj ects through said knuckles, so that the head-rest B will be thereby pivoted to the block C.

An angular block'D is hinged to the rear portion of the plate I), said plate having upwardly-projecting knuckles d, which fit between the depending knuckles of the plate I), said knuckles being pivoted together by the rod or pintle e, which projects through the same. The block D is provided With a depending shank D, having at its lower end a suitable knob or handle D, so that by grasping the handle D and moving it to the right or the left the head-rest B may be caused to oscillate on the rod 61.

A segmental rack E, having upon its inner surface notches E, corresponding in width to the width of the shank D, is arranged upon the rear portion of the block 0 and opposite the depending portion 0 of the said block, a recess F being thus formed between the part 0 and the rack E, in which moves the depending shank D. A springf is fixed to the under portion of the plate I) and extends downwardly into the recess F and presses against the inner side of the shank D, thus normally holding the said shank in engagement with the notches E of the rack E.

To operate the device, the head of a customer or patient, as the case may be, is placed upon the head-rest in the usual manner and the operator grasps the knob D and presses forwardly, so as to release the shank D from engagement with the rack E. The head-rest B may then be swung into a desired position, and upon releasing the knob the spring f Will press the shank D into engagement with the rack E and hold the shank and head-rest connected therewith in position. It will thus be seen that the head of the person may be brought into a desired position without the upon and to the great advantage of the operator.

I have shown the block C provided with the depending standards G, to engage similar recesses in the chairback; but it is obvious least inconvenience to the person operated 5 that the block may be attached in any of the Well-known ways and the head-rest may be pivoted thereto in the manner described.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. An improved head-rest for chairs, comprising a block adapted to be secured to the back of a chair and provided with a rack, a head-rest pivoted to the said block, and a handle-lever secured to the head rest and adapted to engage the rack of the block to hold the head-rest in the position to which it has been adjusted, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. An improved head-rest for chairs, comprising a block provided with means for securing it to a chair, and with a rack, a headrest pivoted to the block, a handle-lever pivoted to the head-rest, and a spring for pressing the handle-lever into engagement with the rack, substantially as described.

3. An improved head-rest comprising the to head-rest and projecting down through the recess F, and a spring for pressing the handlelever into engagement with the rack, substantially as herein shown and described.

4. The herein-described head-rest, consisting of the block 0, provided with the downward ly-proj ectingstandards C the segmental rack E, having notches on its inner face, the recess F between the standards 'and rack the head-rest B, pivoted to the block, the, handle-lever D D D pivoted to thheadrest and projecting down through the recess F, and the spring f, secured to the head-rest and having its free end resting against the handle-lever, as specified.
