SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,975, dated April 20, 1897.

Be it known that I, SARAH P. HANSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fremont, in the county of Sandusky and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rug-Clamps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has relation to improvements in rug-clamps, and the object is to provide a clamp for removably securing a rug or drugget to a carpet.

To this end the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

Inthe accompanying drawings the same reference-numerals indicate the same parts of the invention.

Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved clamp for rugs and druggets. Fig. 2 is a side elevation with the jaws open to receive the edge of the rug. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section with the jaws closed; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view, partly in section, showing the manner of securing the rug in place.

1 represents aflat metal base-plate having its rear edge 2 turned downwardlyand inclined slightly forward and terminating in a series of claw-teeth 3, while its forward end is curved vertically upward to form the serrated jaw 4.

5 5 represent integral hooks turned downwardly and rearwardly from the lower face of the base-plate, as shown. 6 represents the spring top plate, approximating in outline the shape of the base-plate, having their contiguous rear edges secured together by the rivets 7 7. The forward end of the top plate is curved vertically downward to form a serrated jaw 8 in line with the oppositely-disposed jaw 4. The thumb-lever 9 extends about midway transversely between the two plates, with its handle '10 projecting through a slot 11 in the top plate to enable said lever to be conveniently manipulated. Just back of the slot 11 a portion of the metal forming the top plate is bent downwardly to form an integral tongue 12, which serves the purpose of a stop to limit the play of the thumb-lever when it is raised to the vertical position to separate the jaws 4 and 8, and a similar integral tongue 13 projects inwardly and upwardly from the bottom plate 1 to perform the same office for said lever when lowered to release the said jaws.

'lhe operation of the device is as follows: The points of the rearwardly-curved hooks 5 5 are inserted in the face of the carpet and the clamp forced backward to firmly secure said hooks in the body of the carpet with the claw teeth 3 resting on the top of the carpet. The rear edge 2 is then forced downward so that its teeth 3 pass through the carpet and penetrate the floor. The-clamp is now permanently secured in place. Thehandle 10 of the lever 9 is pressed forward to raise the spring-plate 6, thus separating the toothed jaws 4E and 8. The edge of the rug or drugget is now inserted between said jaws and the lever tripped, which allows the top plate to close and firmly secure the rug between the jaws 4 and 8.

hen it becomes necessary to remove the rug for cleaning, the lever is pressed forward to raise the spring-plate (5, the rug removed, leaving the clamp secured to the carpet with the jaws separated ready to receive the rug when it is returned to its former place.

Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the severaLelements of my invention, I do not desire to be confined to the same, as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s

A rug-clamp comprising the base-plate 1 provided with the integral claw-teeth 3, the serrated jaw 4, the rearwardly-projecting hooks 5 5, and the integral tongue 13, in comsaid top plate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
