J.; A. GERLEMANN. FAN ATTACHMENT FOB ROCKING CHAIRS.
No. 554,597. Patented Feb. 11, 1896.
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A. GERLEMANN, OF SIOUX CITY, IOWA.
FAN ATTACHMENT FOR ROCKING-CHAIRS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 554,597, dated February 11, 1896. Application filed September 18,1895. Serial No. 562,833. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. GERLEMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sioux City, in the county of WVoodbury and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Fan Attachments for Rocking-Chairs; and I do declare the followingto be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the let ters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in attachments for rocking-chairs, and it has for its object the provision of a cheaply-constructed and efficient fan attachment which may be readily applied to a rocking-chair and which will be automatically operated when the chair is rocked.
To this end, and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists in the peculiar construction and in the novel combination, arrangement and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the lettersof reference marked thereon, form apart of this specification, like letters of reference indicating the same parts throughout the several views, and in which drawings-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a chair provided with my improved fan attachment. Figs. 2 and 3 are enlarged details in perspective, which will be more particularly hereinafter referred to.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a rocking-chair of any well-known construction, in which one of the rockers B is designed to rest within shallow open-ended trough A upon the floor.
D is a spring-metal rod, which at its lower end is attached to the trough A at a pointnear the forward of said trough, while the upper end of the rod is attached to the lower edge of a segmental gear E, which segmental gear is pivoted at its longitudinal center upon a pivot passed through the body portion F of a cast= ing secured by screws or in any other suitable manner to the side edge of the chair-seat, as shown. The lower end of the body portion 13" of the casting F is bent outwardly at right angles, as shown, and stepped within a seat f in this outwardly-bent portion F is the lower end of a vertical shaft G carrying a beveled pinion G which engages the teeth of beveled segmental gear E. The upper end of the casting F is bent outward to form a horizontal arm F through an opening in which the shaft G extends.
The shaft G is provided at a point near its upper free end with fans H, which are attached to horizontal arms H of an apertured casting H which is adjustable upon the shaft G by means of a set-screw, as shown.
The operation of the device is simple and will be readily understood. Having adjusted the fan at the required height upon the shaft or standard G, a person seats himself in the chair. It willbe seen that when the chair is rocked the fan shaft or standard G will be given three revolutions upon each forward and backward movement of the chair, thus keeping the fans continuously in motion when the chair is being rocked.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a fan attachment for rocking-chairs the combination with the chair having secured to one of its sides a casting having perforated bracket-arms, a vertical shaft-carryingbevelpinion, mounted therein, of a segment E pivoted on apin held in said casting, of a troughshaped shoe in which one of the rockers of the chair is adapted to rock, and a rod D connecting one end of said shoe with the geared segment, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN A. GERLEMANN.
Witnesses:
FR. SCHULTE, CHAS. MEYER.
