UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HOWARD B. JOHNSTON, OF BROWNSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
SAFETY ATTACHMENT FOR INFANTS HlGiH CHAIRS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 661.764, dated November 13, 1900.
Application filed March 14, 1900. Serial No. 8,582. (No modelil To all whom it ma concern.
Be it known that I, HOWARD B. JOHNSTON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Brownsville, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Attachments for Infants High Chairs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in an attachment for high or baby chairs, and it is particularly adapted for use to prevent the occupant from falling from the chair.
The object of the invention is to construct an attachment which can be arranged in a Vertical or horizontal position and is provided with an adjustable foot-rest.
Briefly described, the device consists of a pair of brackets which are pivotally secured at their upper ends to the seat of the chair and are each provided with an oblong slot. A
foot-rest is adj ustably mounted in these slots, and a pair of links is provided at each side of the chair for holding the brackets in a position horizontal with the seat when so desired,
the especial construction of the elements entering into the combination being fully described hereinafter.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a side view of a high or baby chair, showing my improved attachment connected thereto in a vertical position in full lines and a horizontal position in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a front view of a high or baby chair, showing my improved attachment connected thereto and arranged in a vertical manner. Fig. 3 is a disassembled side view'of the supporting-hinge, partly broken away, as shown. Fig. 4 is a top plan view thereof, partly broken away. Fig". 5 is a perspective view of the supporting-hinge broken away at each end. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one end of the adjustable foot-rest.
Referring to the drawings by reference-nu merals, 1 indicates the back of the chair; 2, the side arms; 3, the legs; 4, the cross-brace; 5, the seat, and 6 a suitable tray connected to the top of the side arms in the desired manner.
To the outer end of the seat 5 is pivotally secured to each side thereof, as at 7, the bracket forming my improved attachment and which consists of the sides 8 9, each of which is provided with an elongated slot 10 and are connected together at their lower ends by means of the cross-stri p 11. The reference-numeral 12 indicates a foot-rest provided at each end with a guide-lug 13, having a screw-threaded shank 14 formed integral therewith. The lug operates within the slot 10, and the shank thereof carries a thumb-screw 15 to permit of vertically adjusting the foot-rest 12, as well as to secure the same in position when properly adjusted. To the inner corner of the lower end of each of the sides of the bracket is secured a link 16, as at 17, the upper end of this link being provided with a slot 18. Pivotally secured to the front leg of the chair, as at 19, is a link 20, having the upper end thereof provided with an L-shaped recess 21, in which operates a stop-lug 22, formed integral with the upper end of the link 16. The link is further provided at its upper end with a headed stud or guide-pin 23. The two links 16 20 form a supporting-hinge for securing the attachment in a horizontal position, as shown in dotted lines of Fig. 1.
The hinge is operated as follows: Assuming that the same is in position, as shown in full lines inFig. l, the attachment is elevated to the position shown in dotted lines until the stop-lug engages the upper wall of the recess in the link 20. The attachment at this point will be above the dotted lines shown in Fig. 1 when the attachment is lowered, forcing the link 16 downwardly and the upper Wall thereof engaging the stud or pin 23, securely holding the attachment in position, as shown in Fig. 1 in dotted lines. When it is desired 'to'lower the attachment, the same is elevated until the lower wall of the opening of the link is engaged by the stud or pin 23. The attachment can then be lowered, for the reason that the stop-lug 22 will pass outwardly from the recess in the link 21 and allow the links to assume the position shown in full lines of Fig. 1.
It is evident that the operation of the adjustable foot-rest can be readily understood from the foregoing description.
It is thought the many advantages of my improved attachment for high or baby chairs to prevent the occupant thereof from falling therefrom can be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and it Will be-noted that various changes may be made in the details of construct-ion without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination with a high or baby chair, of a bracket having its upper end suitably connected thereto and carrying an adjustable foot-rest, a link pivotally connected to said chair and provided with an L-shaped recess in its upper end, a headed stud or pin carried in the upper end of said link, a link pivotally connected to said bracket and provided with an opening in its upper end having said stud or pin operating therein, and a stop-lug formed integral with the upper end of said last-named link and adapted to operv chair and each. provided with an oblong slot,
a foot-rest having a guide-lug on each end to engage and operate in said oblong slots, a nut mounted on each of said guide-lugs for securing the foot-rest in the desired position, a pair of links 20 pivotally connected to the legs of said chair and each provided near their upper ends with an L-shaped recess, a headed stud carried in the upper ends of said links, links 16 pivotally connected. at their lower ends to the brackets and each provided near their upper ends with oblong slots to receive said headed studs, and a stop-lug carried by each of said links 16 and adapted to engage in the L-shaped recess of the links 20, all combined and operating substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HOWARD B. JOHNSTON.
