UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH H. KNOWLES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES L. BEATTY, OF SAME PLACE, AND CHARLES A. DOW, OF SIOUX CITY, IOWA.
COMBINED BOX-LlD- SUPPORT AND TAG-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 660,854, dated October 30, 1900.
Application filed February 12, 1900. Serial No. 4,989. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. KNOWLES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Box-Lid Support and 'lag-Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined boxlid support and tag-holder, and has for its ob- ,ject to provide an inexpensive, light, and convenient device that may be readily attached to the lid of a cigar or other box'and which will operate to hold the lid open at any desired angle and is provided with means for detachably holding a price-tag or other ticket or label in such manner that the support or holder will be practically concealed from View.
To these ends my invention consists in the features and in the construction hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of an open cigar-box, showing my improved device ap- Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, the lid being shown as closed in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device removed from the box, and Fig. 4 is a view of the blank before the same is bent up into shape to form the completed article.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a thin flat blank formed of sheet metal or other material suitable for the purpose. The blank comprises a body portion 2, provided on one side and near each end with two laterally-projecting arms 3 and 4, the lower one, 4, of which is formed with an extension 5, which is disposed at a right angle to said arm, as shown. As illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings, the opposite ends of the body portion -2 of the blank project beyond the outer edges of the arms 3 and 4, thereby forming extensions 6. After the blank has been stamped-out or otherwise suitably formed in the shape shown and described the extensions 6 are bent over until they lie parallel with the body 2, thus forming clips or clasps, between which and the body of the blank a price-tag or other ticket, as 7, may be inserted. The arm 3 is bent backward and under the body 2 of the blank until it lies parallel therewith, its extreme end being curved upwardly or outwardly, as most clearly shown in' Fig. 3 of the drawings, and for the purpose hereinafter made apparent. The arm 4 is bent over under the body portion 2 of the blank, and with it the extension 5, the outer or lower end of the latter being turned up or outwardlycurved, as shown. After the parts have been bent in the manner described the blank will haveassumed the shape shown in Fig. 3 and will be in readiness for use.
In applying the device to a box the clips formed by the arms 3 and 4 and the body 2 of the blank are slipped over the edge of one end of the box lid or cover and the price tag or ticket 7 is slipped into place between the body 2 and the clips 6. The curved extension 5 rests against the back of the box and holds the lid or cover open, and by adjusting thedevice toward or from the pivoted or hinged edge of the lid the latter may be held at any angle desired.
By making the device of sheet metal the clips 3 and 4 may be bent up to accommodate the device to lids or covers of varying thicknesses, and by bending up or curving the arm 3 the latter may be easily engaged by the finger to remove the device from the lid.
It will be noted that when the device is ap: plied to the box lid or cover and the tag, card, or ticket is inserted in place the device will be substantiallyconcealed from view. It will also be observed from an inspection of Fig. 2 of the drawings that the box lid or cover may be closed without necessitating the removal of the device.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- I 1. A combined box-lid support and tagholder formed from a single pieceof sheet metal and com prisinga rectangular body portion provided on one side and near its oppo- "site ends with two arms bent parallel with the under side of said body portion, the lowermost of said arms being formed with an ex".
of the said body portion being bent parallel the opposite projecting ends of said body portion being bent parallel with the front or upper side thereof to form c1ips adapted to engage the opposite ends of a tag, substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
JOSEPH H. KNOWLES.
