GATE-"SPRING.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 660,106, dated October 23, 1900; Application filed August 1% 1900, Serial No. 26,872. (No model.)
To (LU Ill/1107771 it may concern.-
Beit known that 1, JAMES L. GROSS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Black well, in the county of Kay and Territory of Oklahoma, have invented a new and useful Gate-Spring, of which the following isaspecification.
This invention relates to gate springs, and has for its object to provide an improved de vice of this character which is constructed so as to facilitate the connection of the device to a gate and the hinge gate post thereof. It is furthermore designed to provide the device with an improved adjustment for taking up any wear upon the spring and for adjusting the tension of the spring to close the gate quickly or slowly, as may be desired.
WVith these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a gate and the hinge gate post thereof having the improved spring applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the spring-adjusting slide. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the sheath and bracket for carrying the slide. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the spring. Fig. 5 is a trans verse sectional view taken through the slide and the sheath to show the adjustable connection therebetween. Fig. 6 is a rear elevation of the device.
Corresponding parts are designated by like characters of reference in all of the figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a substantially L -shaped attaching-bracket, the shorter arm 2 having one or more perforations 3 for the reception of suitable fastenings for securing the bracket to the inner side of a gate-post l, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Extending from the back of the longer arm to the short arm is a suitable brace 5. The opposite longitudinal edges of the longer arm are bent Over upon. the front side thereof, so as to form the opposite hooked flanges (3, and thereby form the arm into a sheath having a longitudinal slot in its front side. Adjacent to the outer end of the sheath or arm 1 there is provided a screw-threaded perforation 7, which registers with the slot. Mounted within the sheath is a slidable plate 8, which is provided at its outer end with a bowed arm 9, that is bent around upon the front side of the slide or plate and is provided with a terminal hook or eye 10. Extending longitudinally of the Slide is a slot 11. A suitable thumb-screw 12 has its shank loosely received within the slot in the slide and also engaged with the screw-threaded perforation 7 of the bracket, so that by adjusting the screw the slide may be held at any longitudinal adjustment upon the bracket. A helical spring 13 has its opposite ends provided with terminal hooks 14, one of which is detachably engaged with the hook or eye 10 of the slide and the opposite hook connected to the gate 15 by means of a screw-eye 16, set into any portion of the gate.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the spring may be conveniently applied to any gate without altering the same, and by adjusting the slidable plate the tension of the spring may also be adjusted to accommodate the same to the requirements of the gate.
WVhat is claimed is- A device of the class described, comprising an attaching-bracket, having a sheath, an adj ustable slide mounted therein, and provided with a longitudinal slot, and a lateral arm, an adjusting-screw carried by the sheath and loosely entering the slotof the slide, and a Spring, having one end connected to the lateral arm, and its opposite end provided with a fastening for application to a gate.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES L. GROSS.
