To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonon WILBUR SHIP- LEY, citizen of the United States, residing at Harmans, in the county of Anne Arundel and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Screen Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to window screen at tachments, and as its primary object contemplates improved adjustable means operable to provide for lateral increase or decrease in the size of a standard screen. I
The invention, as a further object, aims to provide a window screen attachment comprising a pair of attachment sections, one of the said sections being movable laterally of the screen relatively to the other section; spring means being interposed between said sections, said means normally holding the movable section in its outermost position, and, when fitted within a window frame holding the screen sides between the guide strips of the frame.
' As a still further object, I provide simple and efficient means whereby the movable attachment section may be locked against lateral play or movement after having been adjusted as desired.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in their preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, described in the followmg specification and then more particularly pointed out in the claims WlllCh are appended hereto and form a part of this application.
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote likecorresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation ofa window frame, a screen having my improved attachment associated therewith being shown; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 ofFig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary longitudinal sectional view of the attachment, a porlar to Fig. 2 illustrating a modified form of lock means; and Fig. 8 is a fragmentary ylew illustrating the lock means in elevaion.
Before proceeding with the description of the drawings, I desire to call particular attention to the fact that while I have evolved and shown my invention with reference to its application as an accessory to woodframe screens, the same may be readily utillzed, by slightly modifying the form of the immovable attachment section as an accessory to metal-frame screens.
Referring now to the drawings by numerals,

As illustrated to advantage in the sectional view, Fig. 2, the immovable section 6 is composed of a single elongated strip of metal bent equi-distant its respective longitudinal edges toform a socket 8 within which the opposite lateral edge of the screen 4:. is fitted, the fastening means shown at 5 serving to hold the screen in place. Adjacent the respective longitudinal edges of the plate or strip from which the immovable screen attachment section is formed, the said strip is bent inwardly as indicated at 9 to form, between the respective edges of the strip, a longitudinally extending slot 10, the latter serving as a guide for and receiving the movable attachment section designated as an entirety by the numeral 11. Said movable attachment section 11 is also composed of a single strip of elongated metal bent upon itself as shown to form enlargements designated respectively 12 and 13, the enlargement l2 oper' ating within the space or casing formed by the bending of the metal strip of which immovable section 6 is composed, a leaf spring 14 (or a plurality, if necessary), being engageable with 'the inner face of the enlargement 12 to normally hold said movable section 11 in its normal position or, when the screen is arrangedv within the window frame,

As a means whereby movable section 11.
may be locked, subsequent to lateral adjustment, 1 provide a bracket 15 so shaped or formed as to partially embrace, not only enlargement 12, but the spring 14, the engagement between the said bracket and the said enlargement serving as a means whereby the former is held in place. An extension 16, forming a part of the bracket, extends inwardly, or away from the screen, said extension carrying a fastening screw 17, so disposed relatively to immovable section 6 as to extend through a slot 18 formed therein, the slot being of a length suflicient to provide for lateral movement of the bracket and screw in an adjusting operation,
and, as shown to advantage in Fig. 1, eX- tending transversely of the section within which it is formed. A thumb nut 19 is adjustable upon thescrew 17, the nut being engageable with the outer face of section 6 to provide, when tightened, a means whereby said movable section 11 is locked or fastened immovable relatively to the section 6. p
In the modified form shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, the construction of the attachment is substantially the same as in the preferred form, the enlargement 20 of movable section 21, being somewhat increased in size to provide for its engagement, throughout its length, with the inner wall of the casing forming immovable section 22, the contacting point being shown at 23. The fastening means is dispensed with, the spring 24 alone serving to hold section 21 in proper place relatively to the section 22.
Passing on now to a detail description of the modified lock means, illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8, 25 designates the immovable attachment section and 26 the movable attachment section, the latter extending into the former in a manner much the same as that described in the preferred form. Said movable section 26 is enlarged as at 27, the enlargement having a spring 28 afiixed thereto. Immovable section 25 is horizontally slot ted as at 29, through which slot an attaching bolt 30 extends, the bolt being in turn slit or slotted as at 31, the slit being of a size to receive the enlarged portion of the movable section 26 and the adjacent portion of the spring 28, an opening (not shown) be ing formed in the said movable section through which a portion of theattaching bolt 30 extends. A nut 32 is threaded on meense bolt 30, the nut being slit or grooved to receive a portion of the enlargement 27, the groove of the nut and the slot of the bolt being alined. As shown, nut 32 is engageable with the inner face of the slotted portion of stationary section 25. Bolt 30 is threaded throughout the greater portion of its length, the threaded portion extending through the said slot 29 and having mounted thereon a washer 33 and a thumb nut 34 the latter being adjustable relatively to the nut 32 whereby to maintain, when tightened the movable section 26, immovable relatively to section 25. If desired, a pin 36 may be disposed to extend through bolt 30, the pin maintaining enlargement 27 and the adjacent portion of spring 28 within slot 31 therefor.
When it is desired that a screen of a standard size be laterally increased or diminished in size to provide for its arrangement in window frames varying in measurement, thumb nut 19 is first loosened, thus permitting spring 14 to automatically actuate movable section 11 to its outermost position. This automatic movement of section 11 will provide for use of the screen in windows varying in size, the screen when having been arranged as desired within the window frame being locked or fastened by a tightening of the thumb nut upon the screw.
From the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it is apparent that by so arranging the springs of the attachment, the locking or fastening means may be dispensed with, and the movable section of the screen held in place by the spring tension; that said movable section of the screen is adjustable or movable relatively to the stationary section 6 either against or by tension of the springs associated therewith; and that by forming the respective attachment sections, each from a single strip of metal, the cost of manufacture of the screen attachment is reduced to the minimum without in any way diminishing the operativeness of the device.
In reduction to practice, I have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most efficient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim. as new and. desire .to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an attachment for window screens.
a fixed section of a construction affording a casing having a marginal slot formed therein, a relatively movable section of a construction providing an enlargement at one 'end', the enlargement operating within the casing and the movable sectionoperating within the slot, and means engaging the enlarged end of the movable section to maintain said section extended.
2. In an attachment for window screens, a fixed 'section'of a construction affording a casing having a slot formed therein, a relatively movable section fitting said slot andof a construction providing an enlargement at one end, spring means engaging the fixed section and the said enlargement to normally maintain the movable section extended, the enlargement operating within the casing and affording a stop means limiting movement of the movable section.
8. In an attachment for screens, an attachment section of a construction'aflording a casing having a slot formed therein, a movable section fitting said slot and partially inclosed within the' casing, an enlargement formed upon the inclosed end of said movable section, said enlargement aflording a stop means limiting movement of said last mentioned section, spring means engaging the enlargement and the first mentioned section to normally maintain the movable section extended, and means to fasten the movable section against movement.
4. In an attachment for screens, a fixed section, a relatively movable section, an enlargement formed upon each of the respective longitudinal edges of said movable section, one of said enlargements being en.- gageable with the fixed section to limit the relative movement aforesaid, means yieldingly maintaining the said enlargement in engagement with the fixed section, and means operating in a slot therefor formed in the fixed section to lock the movable section in its adjusted position.
5. In an attachment for screens, a fixed section, a movable section, an enlargement formed upon the movable section and inclosed by the fixed section, the enlargement affording a stop to limit relative'movement of the last mentioned section, a spring engaging the fixed section and the enlargement to maintain the movable section extended, and means to releasably lock the movable section in its adjusted position. 6. In an attachment for screens, an attachmg section comprising a strip of material bent equi-distant from its longitudinal edges to provide a socket within which that edge of the screen to which it is attached is fitted, the adjacent longitudinal edges of the said strip of material being bent inwardly to terminate in parallelism and in spaced relation to provide a marginal slot, a movable section operating within the said slot, and an enlargement formed upon the movable section and inclosed by the fixed section, the enlargement being engageable with the inturned edges of the fixed section to, limit relative movement of the movable section. 7,
7. In an attachment for screens, a fixed section of a construction affording a casing having a slotformed therein, a movable section fittin said slot, an enlargement formed upon said movable section and operating within the casing, a spring engaging the fixed section and the said enlargement to normally maintain the movable section extended, a bracket inclosed by the casing and aflixed to the enlargement, and means operating in the slot therefor of the fixed casing to engage the bracket for releasably locking the movable section in its adjusted position.
8. An attachment for window screens including a pair of attachment sections, each of the said sections being formed from a single strip of elongated sheet metal, means fastening one of said sections rigid with the screen, said rigid section being shaped to form a casing within which a portion of the other of the said attachment sections is fitted, means limiting movement of said movable section, and spring means interposed between the said two sections, said spring means normally holding the movable section extended.
