Description

@eine tetra getraut @fitta CHARLES V. WOERD, OF WALTHAM, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN WATCH COMPANY.
Letters Patent No. 65,985, dated Jima 18, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN WINDING-WATGHES.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, CHARLES 1V. WOERD, of Waltham, in the county of Middlesex,'and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements lin Watches, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figures 1 and 2 represent central vertical sections through a watch-case having my improvements applied thereto.
Figure 3 is asection on the line :e :i: of fig. 1, a portion of the interior being removed.
Figureswi and 5 details te be referred to.
The object of invention is to so construct a watch-key and the pendant of a watch that the'key may i he practically combined with or attached to such pendant, so as to be easily removable from the watch for the purpose' of` ivindingf and so as in no Way to interfere with the pendant-ring or bow, the key being also so applied, if desirable, that it may answer as a push-pin to deflect the case-spring.
The invention isxnot broadly in a key to be attached to the watch-pendant, or to a combined key and pushpin, gbut consists, primarily, in forming the key-shank with a screw-thread, fitting into a nut in the pendant, to 'attach the key to the watch. Also, inso applying the key to the pendant that the key and watch-ring are entirely independent. Also, in making the nut which secures the'key to the pendant capable of slight vertical play, so that the key may be operated as a push-pin.
A denotes an ordinary hunting-case; B the key; C the ease-spring; j' the pendant-ring or bow. The key is formed with a head, g, and on its shank a screw-thread is formed, as seen at figs. 1, 2, and 4, the latter figure being a detail view of the key. In the pendant a, or in a. nut or block, b, inserted into the pendant, a screwthread is formed, (as seen particularly in fig. 5, which shows a section ot' the nut,) this thread matching the threadnon the key, so that the key may be screwed directly into the pendant, as seen at figs. l and 2, its barrel h being thereby protected from all entrance of dust, and the key being firmly secured to the watch. By reference to gs. 1 and 2 it will he seen that the key and the nut b are both independent of the ring f. the ends ot' whicliare sprung into recesses made in the opposite sides ofthe pendant, and do not extend into the nut. This arrangement is much better than to have the key or the mitin any way held in position by this ring, as it leaves theparts free to act each for its specific purpose. The lower end .of the key-shank is shown as abutting against the spring C; and in order to adapt the key tothe purpose of n push-pin, for releasing the ease-cover from the spring, I sink one or more recesses c2 into the pendant, from the chamber in which the nut b is inserted, preferably making themtin line with the holes for the pendant-ring, as, seen in the drawings, and into each correspending side of the nut I; enter a small screw or pin, e, the outer endet which projects into the hole er recess d. The'recess d is made of greater diameter than the pin, and the chamber in which the nutb sets is of uniform diameter throughout, so that by pressing down the head y the key is carried from its normal position at fig. l to the position shown at iig. 2, thereby releasing the case-cover from the spring-catch. Upon releasing thehead g the stress of the spring C carries the keyback into its normal position. Where the push-pin is not required, however, the nut b may be made stationary, or the nut-thread may be formed directly in the pendant.
I claim a key, having a screw .formedvupon its shank, to work into a screw-thread formed in the watch4 pendant, or in a nut inserted in the pendant, substantially as shown and described.
I also claim forming a key, (to be directly connected with and disconnected from the pendantf) with its means of attachment integral with or projecting from the shank, substantially as shown and described.
Also, the combination of the n'ut and key B, arranged substantially as set forth.
Also, making the block or nut through which the key extends movable vertically, as and for the purpose substantially as described.
CHAS. V. WOERI).
