Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEVI N. PARKS, OF WINGHENDON, MASSACHUSETTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 47.658, dated May 9, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEVI N. PARKS, of Winchendon, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement on Spools Used in Manufacturing; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descript'on of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed dzawings, making a part of this specification.
0f such drawings Figure lis a section of the spool-body and its head as provided with my invention. Fig. 2 is a section of the metallic cap constituting part of my said invention.
The nature of the improvement consists in combining the body with the head ot the spool bymeans of a socketed cap fastened or screwed to the body and conned to the head by means substantially as hereinafter described.
The said metallic cap (shown at A in Figs. l and 2) has a flat top and a flange, 1. It also has a hole, 2, formed with a female screw, the
whole being as shown in Fig. 2. This cap also has another screw, s, by which itis to be screwed on the end of the body B of the spool, after which the head C of the spool should be placed on the cap in manner as shownin Fig. l, and be secured in place not only by a metallic disk, D, arranged on the outside of the head, but
by means of a screw-gudgeon, E, which passes through thcdisk and screws into the hole2 of the cap. The gudgeon supports the spool While in operation. i
By the use of the above-described cap with the flange thereon a larger surface is obtained for the attachment of the head to the body of the spool, thus securing the head more firmly and diminishingPV its liability to be broken; and whenever a head is broken a new head may be substituted for the broken one, thus avoiding the loss of the remaining parts of the spool.
What'I claim as my invention is t 1. The combination and arrangement of the metallic cap A with the body B, the head G, and the gudgeon E of the spool, the said cap being fastened to the head and to the gudgeon and to the body by means substantially as described. i
2. In combination with the body B, head C, metallic cap A, and gudgeon E, applied together as specified, the metallic disk D, ar` ranged on the external surface of the head, and so as to receive the gudgeon, as specified.
