Description

No: 659,328. Patented Oct. 9, I900. L. C. STRAUSS.
PACKAGE FOR CONTAINING WHISKY, 81.0.
[Application filed June 2, 1900.)
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS O. STRAUSS, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
PACKAGE .FOR CONTAINING WHISKY, ate.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 659,328, dated October 9, 1900.
Application filed June 2, 1900. Serial No. 18,862. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, LOUIS O. STRAUSS, acitizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packages for Containing Whisky and other Liquids, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in packages for containing whisky and other liquids, and has for its object to provide a package of this character of a simple and inexpensive nature in which the whisky or other liquid is contained in a series of small bottles or receptacles so arranged as to be protected from injury and adapted for exposing the goods to view for advertising the brand and for ready removal from the main package when desired for examination or sale.
The invention consists in certain novel features of the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts of the improved package whereby certain important advantages are attained, and the package is made simpler, cheaper, and otherwisebetter adapted and more convenient for use, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, which serve to illustrate the invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a package embodying myinvention, the lid being raised. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken through the package and showing the arrangement of the small receptacles or bottles therein. Fig. 3 is a detached and enlarged detail view showing one of the small bottles or receptacles, together with the envelop in which it is contained.
In the views, 1 indicates the body of the package, formed in the nature of a rectangular box or case having at its top a hinged lid or cover 2, the front and side edges 3 of which are adapted to take over the sides of the body 1 when the lid or cover is closed, as shown in Fig. 2.
In the box or case 1 are arranged a plurality of similar envelopsor containers 4. 4, each consisting of a rectangular elongated openfront box or case of pasteboard or the like, the length of which is such as to permit it to be snugly packed in the main outer box or case 1, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The envelops 4 are packed closely together, side by side, in the box or case 1, there being, as shown in Fig. 2, three tiers or rows of said envelops, one above the other, in the box or case 1, and between each two rows or tiers of receptacles is arranged a sheet 5 of pasteboard or the like 7 to separate the envelops of the respective series or rows and support those of the upper row.
Each of the envelops 4 is formed in its opposite side walls with similarly located notches 6 6, arranged, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, near one end of the envelop, and in packing the envelops in the case 1 care is taken to arrange them with their notched ends alternating in adjacency, respectively, to the front and backof the main or outer box or case 1, as shown in Fig. 1, so that the notches of one envelop will expose the side walls of the next adjacent envelops in a way to permit of grasping the side walls of any desired envelop between the thumb and finger, so that it may be readily removed from the case or package without interfering in any way with the remaining envelops. Each envelop 4 is made of a size adapted to snugly receive a small bottle or receptacle 7, in which the whisky or other liquid is contained. As herein shown, the bottles or receptacles 7 are of elongated rounded form, being made in diameters adapted to fit snugly in the open faced or topped envelops 4, so as to be held against rattling or shifting about, whereby the glass might be broken and the contents spilled. The bottles or receptacles 7 are arranged lengthwise in the envelops 4 and are by preference suitably labeled, so that their labeled faces may be visible at the open tops of the envelops when the package is opened by raising the lid or cover 2.
The improved package constructed according to my invention is of an extremely simple and inexpensive nature and is especially well adapted for use in packing whiskies and other liquids, since it permits the contained goods to be exposed for sale in an attractive and merchantable form to advertise the brand, and also permits of dispensing in a compact form small quantities of liquids, such as may be readily carried in the pocket. When carried in the pocket, the envelop 4 serves not case, a plurality of independent open-front envelops of elongated form arranged in the box or case and having notched sides alternating in adjacency to the fore and back walls of the box or case and bottles or receptacles arranged in the envelops, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me at Cincinnati, Ohio, this 29th day of May, 1900.
LOUIS C. STRAUSS.
