SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 658.954, dated October 2, 1900.
Application filed June 27, 1900. Serial No. 21,831. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. LINT, a citizen of the United States, residing at York, in the county of York, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window Sash Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to window-sash holders, and particularly to improvements upon the wedge-strip and spring-bead shown and described in my Patent N 0. 651,465, granted June 12, 1900.
The invention has for an object to improve the construction of the wedge-strip so that the same may be drawn toward the sash-and permit the free movement of the window whenever desired, whereby the sticking of the sash in its lowered position can be prevented and the spring for operating the strip placed under compression.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for retaining in position and ad j usting the amount of movement of the free end of the spring-bead which is adapted to bear against a shoulder upon the sash at the opposite side from the wedge-strip, and thus produce an equal pressure upon the sash,causing it to travel in a straight line.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is an elevation of a window-frame having the invention applied thereto,with parts in section and broken away. Fig. 2 is a verticallongitudinal section of one side of a sash containing the improved wedge-strip. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3 3 of Fig.1, and Fig. 4 is a detail vertical section of the upper portion of the spring-pressed bead.

The letter A designates a window-frame which may be supplied with any usual form of sashes B, either or both of which may be supplied with the improved devices constituting the present invention. For the purpose of illustration I have shown the wedgestrip 0 as applied to the lowersash B and provided with a flange 0, extended into a groove B in the sash. This forms a compact joint between the sash and wedge-strip, which prevents the entrance of air or insects between the strip 0 and the edge of the sash B, while the flange is completelyconcealed from view and offers no obstruction to the operation of the sash, nor does it affect the usual appearance thereof. This strip 0 is provided at its lower portion with an angular pivot G seated in a socket 13 as described in my former patent, and also supplied with a spring 0 disposed in a socket B of the sash and operating to normally force the strip away from the edge ofthe sash I). The operation of these parts is not more fully described, as it is clearly set forth in the former patent. For the purpose of relieving this spring-pressure of the strip 0 against the way A of the frame I have provided a retracting device for the strip of very simple construction and adapted to be operated by means upon the sash. This device constitutes a flexible connection D, secured at one end to the strip 0 and at the opposite end to a spindle or shaft D, journaled in the sash and disposed within a recess D thereof.

If the sash be in the lowered position (shown in Fig. 1) and. it be desired to raise the same easily, the handle D is turned so as to wind the flexible connection D upon the spindle D, thus drawing the strip toward the sash and relieving the way A of the frictionalcontact with the strip. The window may thus be readily raised or lowered.
At the opposite side of the sash from the wedge-strip O the spring-pressed bead E is provided and adapted to bear against a shoulder B upon the sash. This bead is forced outward by any suitable construction or arrangement of spring, and in my former patent the outward movement of the end of the bead beyond the sash was limited by a pin or lug carried by the other sash. For the purpose of limiting and adjusting the extent of movement of this head E, I have devised a holding means, which consists of a pin F, adapted to be adjusted in the window-frame by any desired meansfor instance, threads F upon its point-and provided with a head F adapted to contact with the outer face of the bead E to limit the movement thereof. This bead may be provided with any desired form of sleeve E around the pin F, or the aperture thereon may be made of suflicient size to permit of a free movement. It will thus be seen that the extent of movement and the consequent degree of pressure upon the shoulder of the sash may be readily limited by adjusting the pin F, and this will also govern and control the raising of the sash when the wedgestrip is retracted, as the extent of movement of the bead E will be so limited that when the wedge O is retracted no tension will be exerted upon the shoulder of the sash and the same left free for movement in raising or lowering. If, owing to shrinkage or other reasons, the sash becomes loose in the frame, the pin F may be adjusted so as to obtain the desired contact-pressm'e against the sash to hold the same against any rattling or other movement. The construction of retracting device herein employed embodying the flexible connection with the strip is particularly desirable, owing to the simplicity of construction and as it permits a movement of the strip in the operation of the window independent of the operation of the spindle, so that no damage or disarrangement of the retracting parts will occur if the sash be operated without using the retracted device.
It will be obvious that changes may be made in the details of construction and configuration without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a window-sash holder, the combination with a frame, of a sash provided with a provided with a wedge-strip having its lower end in contact with a sash, a spring for forcing the upper end of said strip away therefrom, a spindle rotatably mounted in said sash, and a flexible connection extending from said spindle to said strip; substantially as specified.
3. In a window-sash holder, the combination with a frame having a way, of a sash provided with a spring-pressed wedge-strip pivoted at one end, a shoulder upon said sash at the opposite side of said strip, a bead bearing against said shoulder, and a headed pin extending through an aperture in said bead and adjustably secured to said frame; substantially as specified.
4. In a window-sash holder, the combination with a frame having a way, of a sash provided with a wedge-strip pivoted at its lower portion in said sash, a spring to force said strip against said way, a spindle rotatably mounted in said sash, a flexible connection between said strip and spindle, a yielding bead bearing against a shoulder upon said sash upon the opposite side from said strip, and a headed. pin extending through the aperture in said bead and adjustably secured to said frame; substantially as specified.
