MILLARD F. IIATTON, OF LANSING, MICHIGAN.
MEDALLION PICTURE AND FRAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 652,675, dated June 26, 1900. Application filed October 6, 1899. Serial No. 732,757. (No model.)
To a whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, MILLARD F. IIATTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lansing, county of Ingham, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Medallion or Plaque Pictures and Frames; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
'This invention relates to the construction and framing of medallion or plaque pictures in a ready, simple, tasteful, and economical manner; and it consists of the structure and combination of devices hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in section. Fig. 2 is a detail View in elevation of the rear portion. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing a modifica tion in construction. Fig. 4 is a view in section, showing a modification in the arrangement of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the threading of the central head of the rear portion.
Icarry out my present invention as follows:
In the drawings a, denotes a medallion or plaque picture, and b a frame which may be recessed, as shown at c. The medallion-picture is shown formed with an outer portion cl, with a body portion 6, and with a rear portionf. The outer portion cl may be formed with a turned rim 9 and the body portion 0 with a flanged rim h. The rear portion may also be constructed with a beaded rim 2', engaging the marginal edge of the rim g, between it and the rim h.
A special feature of my present invention consists in the construction of the rear portion f, so that at the center thereof it shall be spaced from the center of the body portion, the center of the rear portion being also constructed for the ready engagement therewith of a screw j to engage the medallion with the frame. This screw may either be rigidly secured to the rear face portion, as
indicated in Fig. 4, as by soldering the screw thereto, so as to project rearward therefrom, or the screw may be secured in the frame, as indicated in Fig. 1, so that the medallion may be screwed down thereupon. The rear plate may be provided also with orifices k to secure a supporting easel or bracket, if desired, thereto. The central portion of the rear plate is preferably shaped into a central head Z, to set snugly against the frame, as shown, while outward therefrom said rear plate may contact with the body portion 6, as indicated at p. The head Z may have a threaded engagement with the screw when the screw is secured to the frame, as in Fig. 1. The screw in this case is secured in the front face of the frame. 7
In Fig. 2 I have shown the rear portionf cut away, leaving arms m connecting the head with the rim, the cut away portions being shown at n. The rear portion f may be cut away in any desired ornamental manner, so as to present a neat appearance when sepa rated from the frame. The spacing of the central head Zfrom the back 6 permits the engagement therein of a screw secured to the frame, as in Fig. 1.
In Fig. 3 the rear portion is made solid outside the head Z.
I prefer that the parts (Z c f should be as sembled before the medallion is secured onto the frame.
By spacing the rear plate at the center from the body portion opportunity is given to engage a screw with the head and to permit, as illustrated in Fig. 1, the screw to pass through the head. The rear plate contacting with the body portion around about the center and adjacent thereto effectually braces the body portion.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. A medallion or plaque picture having a body portion, and a rear plate spaced at the center thereof from the body of the picture and contacting with said body portion adjacent to the center thereof, and in combination therewith a frame, and a fastening de vice engaging the center of the rear plate with the frame.
2. A medallion or plaque picture havinga rear plate formed with a central threaded body portion and a rear plate spaced at the head spaced from the back of the picture. 10
