NiTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN WATTERS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TOP-PROP BLOCK FOR CARRIAGES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 238,541, dated March 8, 1881.
Application filed January 29, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN WATTERS, of the city of New York, county of New York, and State ofNew York, haveinvented an Improved Top-Prop Block, of which the following is a specification. a
Figure l is a perspective View, and Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical cross-sections, of my improved top-prop block.
This invention relates to an improvementin top-prop blocks for carriages, which blocks have heretofore been made of india-rubber or other similar material, and which, although made of elastic material, being fastened upon iron bars, are seldom sufficiently elastic to support the back-bow in its backward fall without unnecessary shocks. Now, if the topprop block is not made quite elastic, it is liable to become out by the back-bow, and also to mar the latter, amlaconstruotion which will make the top-prop block perfectly elastic is very desirable.
To this end my invention consists in providing the cushion part of the top-prop block with one or more air-channels that traverseit, thereby producing an air-cushion, which, be-
(ModeL) A represents a top-prop block of the ordinary form, made of india-rubber or other analogous material.
My invention consists in forming the airchannel a through the cushion part b of this block A. This air-channel a is a perforation extending preferably from end to end of the block, and is, by preference, formed longitudinally through the same, as indicated; but it may, if desired, be formed diagonally or in a curved line through the block; or more than one such perforation may be supplied, if desired.
I claim- A top-prop block made of elastic material and provided with one or more holes, a, through its supporting part b, for the purpose of forming an air-cushion, substantially as described.
JOHN WATTERS.
