GEORGE I DREW, OF PROVIDENCE, RI-IODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- IIALF TO ALFRED CALDWELL, OF SAME PLACE.
ROCKING ARTICLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 617,438, dated January 10, 1899.
Application filed October 18, 1897. Serial No. 655,530. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. DREW, of the city and county of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rocking Articles; and I do hereby declare the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same, to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The object of the invention'is to provide means for producing an easy-made and agreeable rocking motion, and may be applied to chairs, cradles, or other articles to which a rocking motion is to be imparted; and to that end the invention consists in providing the body of the chairor other article with curved surf-aces which rest freely upon supports which are provided with rocking-surfaces.
By thus forming rocking-surfaces upon the body of the article and upon the supports, on which the body rocks freely, the article may be given a long and slow oscillation with the use of comparatively short rockers.
In the drawings the invention is shown applied to a rocking-chair; but it will be understood that the invention is equally applicable to other rocking articles.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of a chair embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of a portion of the same.
The chair-body consists of the side pieces A and the cross-bars 0, upon which the seat of the chair is supported. The side pieces 0 are curved upon their bottom edges to form rocking-surfaces, and said pieces restfreely upon the upper edges of two supports B, which form the side pieces of a frame con sisting of said supports B and the cross-bars O. The lower edges of the pieces B are frame.
be provided with tongues E, which engage grooves E in the pieces A and serve to keep the parts in alinement. Rods D may be used to. connect the body and the supporting-frame, said rods extending from one piece A to the piece B upon the opposite side and serving also as a means forlimiting the movement of the body on the frame, While allow ing the pieceAto rock freely upon the upper edge of pieces B. Other means may be used to hold the pieces A and B in alinement, or other means may be used for connecting the body and frame and limiting the movement of one with relation to the other.
That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A rocking article comprising a body provided with curved surfaces resting freely upon supports, and supports on which said curved surfaces rest provided with rocking-surfaces, substantially as described.
2. A rocking article comprising a body provided with curved surfaces resting freely upon a frame, and a frame provided with rockingsurfaces, substantially as described.
3. A rocking article comprising a body pro vided with side pieces having curved lower edges resting freely upon the upper edges of supports, and the supports on which said side pieces rest having curved lower edges, substantially as described.
4. A rocking article having the side pieces frame provided with side pieces B B the upper edges of which are engaged by the lower edges of the pieces A A, and the lower edges of which are curved, and a tongue-and-groove connection between the engaging edges of the pieces A and B to hold said pieces in alinement, substantially as described.
