CHARLES H. JACKSON, 0]? MELROSE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO CONANT, BALL COMPANY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
TABLET ARM-CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 9, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. JAoKsorI, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Melrose, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tablet Arm-Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a chair intended for lunch rooms and having a tablet supported above one of the side edges of the seat in position to serve as a support for dishes, etc., used by the occupant of the chair, and a back projecting above the rear edge of the seat.
The invention has for its object to enable the back to afford all the support requisite for the comfort of the occupant and at the same time permit free backward movements of the elbow of that arm of the occupant which is contiguous to the tablet.
The invention consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying .drawingsz-Figure 1 represents a perspectiveview of a chair embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 represents a rear elevation of a modification.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the figures.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, 12 represents the seat from the rear corners of which two back members 13 and 14 project upwardly, said members being of unequal height and preferably integral with the rear legs of the chair as shown.
20 represents a wide arm rest or tablet located above one of the side edges of the seat, and projecting outwardly from one side of the chair. The tablet is attached at its rear end to the shorter member 13, the upper surface of the tablet and the upper end of the member 13 being substantially flush with each other so that the said upper end forms an extension of the supporting surface of the tablet. The forward portion of the tablet may be supported by a'fixed upright 15.
16 represents a transverse back member which is attached to and extends between the members 13 and 14, and is cut away at one end to form an elbow-receiving recess having a substantially horizontal edge 17 which extends inwardly from the upper end of the member 13 partly across the chair, and an upright edge 19 which extends upwardly from the edge 17 to the upper edge 18 of the back. The recessed member 16 and the longer upright member 1 1- form anon-symmetrical or one sided rest for the back of the occupant, extending from the recess to the side of the chair opposite the side from which the tablet projects.
The upright edge 19 of the recess is offset inwardly from the side of the chair from which the tablet projects, and from the inner edge of the tablet. The recess in the back forms an elbow space extending across the backabove and at the rear end of the tablet, so that the occupant of the chair is enabled, while leaning against the back, to swing one elbow freely backward crosswise of the back and freely move the corresponding hand to any part of the upper surface of the tablet, the back offering no obstruction to such movement. The supporting surface or back rest afforded by the front sides of the members 14 and 16, is of suflicient area to give the back of the occupant a comfortable support while he is swinging his elbow in the recess.
Fig. 3 shows a modification in which the tablet 20 is entirely separated from the back and is supported by upright members 21, (only one of which is shown) rising from the seat. The back, which may be composed of. upright members 22 and a transverse member 23, is reduced in width as compared with a back of ordinary proportions, its edge adjacent to the tablet being offset inwardly therefrom so that a similar elbow space is provided to that provided by the construction first described.
It will be observed that in both of the forms of the invention illustrated in the drawings the back rest is located nearer to one side of the seat than the other, and that the upright which supports the rear end of the tablet terminates at or below the plane of the tablet to leave an unobstructed elbow space back of the latter.
What I claim and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is 1. A tablet arm chair having a back rest the plane of said tablet to leave an unobstructed elbow space back of the tablet.
2. A tablet arm chair having a back and V a tablet, the back being cut away to the rear of said tablet, to provide unobstructed elboW space and to form a back rest located nearer to the side of the seat away from said tablet than to the other. 7
3. A tablet arm chair havinga tablet projecting inwardly from one side of the chair, longer and shorter upright back members at opposite sides of the chair, thetablet being attached to the shorter member and substantially flush with the upper end thereof,
and a transverse back member provided With a recess having an'edge Wh1ch extends 1n-' Wardly'fro-m the upper end of the shorter Copies of this patent may be obtained for back member and an upright edge extend ing to the upper end of the transverse member and offset inwardly from the inner edge of the tablet, said edges and the-upper end of the shorter member forming an unobstructed elbow space above and behind the tablet, the transverse member being extended to the longer upright member and for1ning therewitha non-symmetrical back rest at one side of said space.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature, in presence of tWo Witnesses.-
