TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, -EZRAM JOHNSON, of Joliet, in the county of Will, and State of .Illinois, have invented a new and improvedWindow-Sash Fastcnenand Lock; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 3is a detail vertical section of the sash taken through the line z z, fig. 4, and showing the mode of operating the fastener.
Figure 4 is a detail vertical section of'the same taken through the line I z, fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts'.
My invention has for its object to furnish 'an improved window-sash fastener and lock, soconstructed and arranged that it will hold the sash at any desired elevation, and when the sash is closed, will hold it securely locked; and it consists in the combination of a toothed wheel and sliding ratchet-bar with the camshaft of the fastener, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the sash, and B the casing of a window, about the construction and arrangement of which parts-there is nothing new. In the groove of the casing B, in which the sash A slides up and down, is formeda recess into which is fitted the 'case C of the-fastener, as shown in fig. 4. D is tlie cam or fastener, the shaft of which works inbearings formed in the sides of the case or cap C, as shown in fig. 4. The face of the cam Dis toothed, as shown in the drawings, so that it maytake hold of the sash A, and hold it securely at any elevation to which it may have been'rais ed. The teeth of the cam D should be made of such a form that they will allow the sash to be raised, but will prevent its being lowered until the cam is moved away therefrom. The cam D is so formedthat it is held forward against the sash A by its own weight, and it can only he moved away to allow the said sash to be lowered by operating the shaft E. When the sash is entirely closed or lowered the cam D drops, by its own weight, into the notch a formed in the edge of the sash A, and locks in securely. The shaft E may be made in one piece, or, i-ifldesired, it may he made in two parts or pieces, a" and e, the inner end of the part e being made square and fitting into a square socket formed in the end of the part e When the walls of the building are thick, and consequently the distance fromvthe earn D to the inner sideb of the casing considerable, the shaft E need not extend clear through, but may have a toothed wheel or a-segment of a toothed wheel, 1F, attached to its end, within a recess, 6 formed within ithe'casing B for thatpurpos'e. In this case the wheel F is operated, and through it the cam D, by a ratchet-rack or toothed har,..G-, working in a groove formed for it in the casing 13, as shown in fi'g. 3
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The toothed wheel F, in the recess 6 of the casing '13, attached to the end of the shaft E, cam D, and toothed bar G,.when constructed, arranged, and operating as herein set forth for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 30th day of July, 1866.
EZRAM I JOHNSON.
