'ro ALL PERSONS-To wHoM 'THESE' PRESENTS' MAY 00Min.v
Be it known that I, NATHAN F. MATHEWSONN' Barrington, ofthe county of Bristol, of the State of Rhode Island, have made a. new and useful Invention having Reference to. the Locking of Window-Sashes; and ,do hereby declare the same to he fully ldescribed in the following specification, and representedin'the'accompanying drawings, of which-'- I' Figure 1 is a vertical section of a. window-frame and its two sashes as provided with my invention.-
Figure 2 is ahorizohtal section of the sash-lock.- I Figure 3 is a rear-end view of it. Figure 4 is a. side view of the key. l In such drawings, A denotes the case for containing the operstive'parts of the lock, it being let into the outer face of the lower sash B. Within this case, and so as to turn horizontally ou a centre, a',"-is a swing-bolt, C, provided with a toothed sector, D, which engages with a gear or pinion, arranged within the loclrfca'se, and provided with akeysocket, b, to receive a key, formed as shown in iig. 4. 'I 1 By inserting the key inA the socket b, and revolving the pinion, the .toothed sector and the swing-holt may be moved so as to cause the bolt to protrude from. the'case, and enter a. receiving-socket or'recess, c, formed in the lower bar of the other sash G, or in a plate, d, fastened thereto.` When the bolt is within the recess c, the two sashes will he locked together, so that neither can be moved vertically within thewindow-frame H. In v order to hold theseetor'and bolt in position, when the latter is projectedfrdmnthecase, I employ n spring-dog or click, g, axed at one end to the ease, and having its other end bearing against thelperiphery of the sector; such dog being formed `to enter between the teeth of the sector,..and to he sprung therefrom by the ,pressure of the sector, caused by the key. In my arrangement of the locking-mechanism, it is wholly within the two s'slxes,
-instead of being in their upper edges, and in sight, as are most if not all other sash-fasteners, and there is a. key-hole, It, to be made in the wood of the sash, in order tol admit' the ltey to the lo'ck. My arrangementof 4the operative parts ofthe lock, with respect to the two next adjacent horizontal harsikof the two sashes, is therefore productive of utility and advantage. v
1. I claim the combination of the toothed sector and' gear, provided with a key-socket, or .its equivalent, with the radial swing-bolt, applied to a. case, as specified.
2. I also claim the combination and arrangement of the spring-.dog g with the radial swing-holt, its toothed sector,t and the operative gear thereons provided with a key-socket, or its equivalent, as set-forth.
3. I also claim the arrangement of the radial-spring-holt, and its operative mechanism nd-receving-socket, with the two hars'z' lc of the two s-ashes, in manner as specified. I
