Beit known that I, ALvrN ANTHONY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stull, in the county of Wyoming and State'of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Saw- Handle, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in crosscut-saws, and has for its object to provide a device of this character of a simple and inexpensive nature which shall be provided with means for holding the sawblade to the handle in a secure and iirin manner, the devices being so constructed and arranged as to permit of readily disengaging the saw-blade from the handle.
The invention consists in a device of this character comprising a handle, a clampingplate fitting on the handle and provided with a groove or grooves to receive the edge of the saw-blade at the end thereof, a clampingbolt passing through the clamping-plate and through the handle, said bolt being screwthreaded at one end and having its opposite end provided with laterally enlarged and attened jaws adapted to embrace between them the saw-blade, the edge of which is engaged with the groove in the clamping-plate, a fastening device for securing the saw-blade in position between the clamping-jaws, and a nut screwing on the clamping-bolt to hold the same to the handle.
The invention also contemplates certain novel features of the construction, combination, and arrangement of the various parts of the fastening device employed for holding the saw-blade in position between the jaws of the clamping-bolt, whereby'oertain important advantages are attained and the device is made simpler, cheaper, and otherwise better adapted for use, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the claim.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I have shown in the accompanying drawings a saw-handle constructed in accordance With my invention, in which drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing one end of a crosscut-saw provided with a handle constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken transversely through the handle and show-` ing the construction and arrangement of the devices for holding the same in place on the end of the saw. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken through the clamping-jaws and showing the construction of the fastening device for securing the saw-blade in position between said jaws. Fig. 4. is a detail perspective view showing the arrangement of the grooves in the surface of the clampingplate for holding the edge of the saw-blade.
In the views, 1 indicates the blade of an ordinary crosscut saw, and 2 indicates a stout wooden handle having a reduced lower portion 3, forming a shoulder around the lower part of the handle, as indicated at 4 in Fig. 1.
5 indicates the clamping-plate, the bodj7 portion of which is shaped to conform to the curvature of the side surface of the lower part of the handle l, said clamping-plate having its upper edge adapted to engage under the shoulder Il, the body portion of the plate fitting, as shown in the drawings, against the side of the reduced portion 3 of the handle, and said clamping-plate is provided, as shown in the detail View, Fig. 4, with parallel projecting beads or ribs 6, extending longitudinally of the clamping-plate 5 and forming between them a longitudinal groove or channel adapted to receive the edge ofthe saw at the end thereof in avwell-known way. The clamping-plate 5 is also provided with a circular opening 7, extending through it in line with the groove formed by the beads or ribs 6 and adapted for the passage of the clamping-bolt 8, as shown in the sectional viewv Fig. 2, and on opposite sides of said opening 7 are produced thickened projecting portions or ears 9, extending in directions at right angles to and on opposite sides of the ribs or beads 6 and in the same plane therewith, said ears or projections being provided in their outer surfaces with grooves 10, also adaptedto receive the edge ofthe saw-blade l at the end thereof when said saw-blade is set at right angles to its position shown in Fig. l. The outer. faces of the ribs 6 and the grooved transverse extensions or projections are not only located in the same rectilinear plane, but said extensions extend beyond the IOO having formed in it a perforation 12 for the passage ofl the clamping-bolt 8, the reduced lower portion 3 of the handle being likewise transversely perforated, as shown at 13, for the passage of said bolt, as clearly indicated in Fig. 2.
The clamping-bolt 8 is provided at one end with screw-threads 14,whereon screws a wingnut 15, and at the opposite end of the clamping-bolt are formed clamping-jaws 16 of eularged and flattened form extending parallel with each other and spaced apart sufficiently to receive between them the end portion of the saw-blade 1, as indicated in Fig. 3. rlhe inner edges of these jaws are straight and fiat and normally stand vertical, as seen in Fig. 1.

perforated, as shown at 17 in the drawings, at opposite sides of the clamping-bolt 8, and said perforations serve for the passage of the arms 18 of a fastening device, said arms ben'g connected by means of a yoke 19, extending between them. The arms 1S are adapted to pass through openings produced in the end of the saw-blade 1, and said arms are capable of longitudinal movement to permit of being disengaged from the saw-blade when it is desired to connect the same to or disengage it from the saw'handle, the movement of the arms 18 being limited by means of a bail 2O of curved form, which is carried on the side of one of the clamping plates or jaws 16 and extends over the yoke 19.
When it is desired to secure the saw-blade 1 to the handle constructed in accordance with my invention, the arms 18 of the fastening device are drawn out until the yoke 19 engages the bail 20, whereupon the end of the saw-blade is entered edgewise into the space separating said clamping-jaws until its edge portion engages the groove formed in the clamping-plate between the ribs or beads 6, whereupon suaid yoke 19 is pushed inward against the side surface of the clamping-jaw 16, so as to engage the arms 18 with the openings in the saw-blade and also with the openings 17 in the opposite clamping-jaw 16, and it will be seen that in this-way the saw-blade is securely held between the clamping-jaws. The nut 15 will then be turned upon the threaded end 14 of the clamping-bolt8 in such a way as to securely bind the parts together and hold the edge of the saw-blade engaged with the groove in the clamping-plate, as will be readily understood.
When the saw-blade is engaged with one of the grooves of the clamping-plate 5 and the nut 15 is forced against the plate 11, the clamping-bolt is drawn outward, causing the arms 18 of the fastening device to bind against the saw-blade, whereby the fastening device is firmly held in engagement with the blade. By this construction the cutting edge of the blade may be arranged at either side, and the fastening device will not drop out of engage-l ment with the same when the yoke is arranged on the lower face of the blade and the latter is in a horizontal position.
The spaced openings in the jaws of the clamping-bolt for the reception of the pins 1S of the yoke serve to hold the end edge of the saw-blade seated in the desired groove of the plate 5 from tilting movement parallel with the planes of said jaws; but as the blade of the saw fits snugly between the opposing faces of the jaws lateral twisting movement or displacement transversely to the plane of the saw-blade is effectually prevented, and the blade is strengthened by this contact of the jaws contiguous to the perforations of the saw-blade, which are in registration with the pin-seats 17 in the jaws.
lhe longitudinal ribs 6 and the` grooved transverse extensions 9 (the outer faces of which are, as stated, located in the same plane) are designed to receive and to constitute a bearing for the flat contiguous faces of the jaws 16. These flat faces of the jaws are considerably greater in length than the width of the extensions, so that when the saw isin its longitudinal position the fiat rear faces of the clamps will have a considerable bearing against the ribs both above and below the transverse extensions. The clamping-plates are furthermore transversely offset from the boltthat is to say, their flat faces are sufficiently wide to give them a bearing not only upon the ribs, but upon the adjacent portions of the transverse extensions as well. By reference to Fig. 2 of the drawings the longitudinal bearing of one of the clamping-jaws upon one of the longitudinal ribs is clearly illustrated, and in Fig. 1 the clamping-plate is shown as being sufficiently wide to cause it to extend beyond the rib 6 and to have a firm bearing upon the transverse extension 9. Obviously the same rm bearing is obtained when the saw is in the position at right angles to that illustrated in Fig. 1, because in that case the jaws will have a longitudinal bearing upon the extensions 9 and will also cxtend above and below the extensions to bear against the adjacent portions of the ribs 6.
The longitudinal spaced ribs 6 and grooved transverse extensions 9 have their outer surfaces in the same plane, so as to receive and. sustain the thrust of the jaws 16 thereagainst after the parts have been assembled and tightened. This disposition of the parts prevents the pins 18 from being subjected to severe strain, which would cause possible injury to the saw-blade upon straining the clamp-bolt to a high tension. The ribs 6 and IIO transverse extensions 9 materially strengthen and stiften the plate 5 in both directions and enable said plate to be of the minimum thickness consistent with strength, whereby the attaching means are neat in appearance and comprise a minimum amount of material.
From the above description it will be seen that the improved device is of an extremely simple and inexpensive nature and is especially well adapted for the purpose for which it is design ed,andit willalso be obvious from the above description that the invention is capable of considerable modification without niaterial departure from its principles and spirit, and for this reason I do' not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise form and arrangement of the parts herein set forth.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- The combination with an apertured handle, and a pair of apertured clamping-plates one of which is provided with longitudinal ribs extending from end to end of the plate, and transverse groove extensions extending across the plate and beyond its side edges, the outer faces of the ribs and extensions being located in the same rectilinear plane, of a clampingbolt passed through the plates and handle and extending beyond the ribbed plate at the juncture of the groove with the space between the ribs, parallel, enlarged clampingjaws carried by the end of the bolt, said jaws having flat bearing-faces opposed to the ribs longitudinally and of greater width than the ribs to bring said faces into `bearing contact with the adjacent portions of the transverse extensions, whereby said clamping-plates are Iirmly retained in contact with both the ribs and extensions, yoked pins piercing the clamping-jaws, a bail-shaped keeper spanning the yoke and retained by one of the jaws, a saw clamped between the clampingplates, pierced by the yoked pins and having its rear edge retained between the ribs of the clamping-plate, and a nut screwed upon the end of the clamping-bolt opposite the jaws for the purpose of drawing the several elements into rigid organization.
