Be it known that I, F RANKLIN E. W'Hrrn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Union, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented new andy useful Improvements in Dado Saws, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to dado saws.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of dado saws, more especially that shown and described in Patent No.l 1,228,728, granted to me June l5, 1917, and to provide a simple, practical and eicient dado saw of strong, durable and light construction, having improved clamping means for securing the saw blades to the dado saw or hack-saw frame.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in theV constuction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in theA claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to' without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a dado saw constructed in accordance with this invention.

Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure l.
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view of a dado saw.
Figures 5 and 6 are detail views of one of the sections of the saw blade clamp.
Figures 7 and 8 are detail views of other sections of the saw bladeclamp.
Referring to the drawing in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, 1 designates a dado saw or hack-saw frame constructed of suitable metal composed of upper and lower longitudinal bars 2 and 3 and vertical connect ing bars 4 arranged in pairs and disposed at the end portions of the upper and lower bars 2 and 3. The frame 1 is also provided at one end with projecting arms 5 forming extensions of the upper and lower side bars andsupporting a handle or grip 6, preferably constructed of hard wood and secured betweenthe arms or extensions 5 by means Vof a vertical rivet 7 piercing lthe handle and the arms or extensionsand preferably constructed of steel but any other suitable fastening means may, of course, b e employed for securing the arms or eXtensions'.
The vertical connecting bars have inner, oppositely beveled opposed faces 8 which are adjustably engaged by sections orv members 9 and 10 of saw'blade clamps which adjustably secure saw blades 11 and 12 to the frame 1 at opposite sides thereof.
The section 9 of each of the saw blade clamps is provided with `a substantially rec` tangular head, as clearly illustrated in Figure 5 of the drawing, and it has a cylindrical shank 13 which is eXteriorly threaded at 14 for the reception of a clamping nut 15 which engagesv the co-acting section 10 of the clamp. The head 9 is provided at its inner face with beveled side portions 16 which fit the oppositely beveled vertical connecting bars 4 at one side thereof, and the shank extends through the space between the bars 4 and receives the clamping section 10 which is provided at opposite sideswith beveled faces 17 to lit against the opposite beveled faces of the bars 4, as clearly shown in Figure 3 of the drawing. The beveled faces of the sections are firmly clamped in engagement with the beveled faces of the bars 4 by the clamping nut 15 which is arranged on the threaded shank 13 and the saw blade 12, which is provided with openings 18 to receive the shank 13, is clamped against the frame by means of the clamping nut 15.
The section 9 of each clamp is provided with a central opening 19 and it is interiorly threaded to receive a screw 20 andA is counterbored at one end of the opening 19 for the reception of a collar 21 formed integral with the screw 20 and located adjacent to one end thereof. The screw 20 is provided at its ends with nuts 22 and 23, and the saw blade 11 has apertures 24 through which the screws 20 pass, and the nuts 22 of the screws 20 securely clamp the saw blade 11 to the dado or hack-saw frame at the opposite side of the same from that on which the saw blade 12 is clamped. The nut 23 is preferably in the form of a cap nut, as shown, and the clamps adjustably secure the saw blades to the dado or hacksaw -frame and are movable upwardly and downwardly to vary the extent of the depending or downwardly projecting portion of the saw blades and thereby provide saw blades of different effective widths for cutting the material. In other words, the width of the saw blades may be readilyT varied by adjusting the clamps upwardly or downwardly in the spaces between the connecting bars l of the dado or hack-saw trame. The nuts are preferably checkered or knurled but any other suitable means may, of course, be employed for enabling the nuts to be readilly adjusted for operating the clamps.
What is claimed is: v
l. A dado saw comprising a saw frame with an opening, a clamp adjustably mounted in the opening and composed of sections engaging the saw frame at opposite sides thereof, one of the sections being provided with a threaded shank extending through the other section, a clamping nut mounted on the shank, a pair of saw blades located at opposite sides of the frame, one of the saw blades being clamped between the said nut and the frame, and a screw mounted in the clamp and provided with a clamping nut engaging the other saw blade. n 2. A dado saw comprising a saw 'frame provided with an opening and having beveled faces at opposite sides thereof, a clamp composed of sections having oppositely beveled heads fitting the beveled faces et the saw frame, one of the sections having a threaded shank extending through the other section, a clamping nut mounted on the threaded shank, a screw extending through the section having the shank and provided with a clamping nut, and saw blades located at opposite sides of the saw frame and having openings to receive the shank and the screw and clamped to the frame by the said nuts.

A dado saw including a saw frame provided with an opening and having oppositely beveled faces at opposite sides of the opening, a clamp composed ot sections provided with oppositely beveled faces fitting the beveled faces ol the said frame, one oi the sections of the frame being provided with a threaded shank having a threaded opening and counterbored at one side thereof, a screw extending through the opening ot the shank and provided with a collar fitting in the said counterbored portion, clamping nuts arranged on the screw and on the shank, saw blades located at opposite sides ot the saw trame and adjustably clamped to the same by the said nuts and a lock nut mounted on the screw and engaging the shank.
4. A dado saw including a trame comprising spaced upper and lower bars and spaced vertical connecting bars provided at opposite sides with beveled faces, clamps mounted between the vertical connecting bars and each comprising two sections having oppositely beveled faces to t the said vertical bars, one of the sections having a threaded portion extending through the other section, and a clamping nut mounted on the said threaded portion, screws mounted in the said clamps and provided with clamping nuts, and saw blades located at opposite sides of the saw frame and provided with openings to receive the threaded portions of the clamps and the said screws and engaged by the said clamping nuts whereby .they are adjustably secured to the saw trame.
