To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM OIENoosKI, a

Kouts, in the county of Porter and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and .useful Improvements in Rowing Apparatus; and

clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use thesame, reference being had to the accompanying drawpart of this specification, and in which-- Figures 1 and 2 are side views of my improved rowinggear, showing it attached to the side of a boat, the oar and handle being shown broken off; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view, seen slightly from above, of the im provement, the bottom plate and the oar and handle being removed.

My invention has relation to rowing-gear, and it contemplates certain improvements up on the support for a rowing apparatus for which Letters Patent No. 320,458 were grant ed to me on the 23d day of June, 1885; and it consists, to that effect, in the improved construction and combination of parts of the said support, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, theletter A indicates the gunwale of a boat. 13 is the bottom plate, and O is the rowing-gear, which has been described and claimed in the aforesaid Letters Patent, and consequently will need no further explanation.

D is the pivot-bolt upon which the bottom plate rocks, and this bolt is passed through the perforated upper ends of two lugs, E E, which project upward from a base-plate, F, which is clamped upon the gunwale of the boat in a manner which will hereinafter be more fully explained. One end of the bolt is provided with a head, G, and the other end hasatransverse perforation, H, through which perforation passes a split key, I, the said head and split key bearing against the outer sides of thelugs and holding the bolt in place. ed perforations K, through which pass clamp ingscrews L, and the ends of the plate above the ears orlips are formed into screw-threaded transverse eyes M, in which the screw-threaded shanks N of two clamping-bolts, O O, fit, the said bolts having lips 1? formed at the smooth ends of the bolts. The lips of these bolts may bear against one side of the gunwale of the boat, while the lips at the ends of the base'plate may fit against the other side, and the clamping-bolts may be adjusted by screwing them farther in or out, o as to fit the thickness of the gunwale. The clampingscrews in the lips of the base-plate may now be turned to bearv against the side of the boat, and the plate may in this manner be secured to the gunwale. By drawing the lips of the clamping-bolts farther from or nearer to the rigid lips of the base-plate, by turning the screw-threaded ends of the belts in their per forations, the plate may be adjusted to fit up on gunwales of different thicknesses, the lips being first adjusted to slip over the gunwale, whereupon the clamping-screws are tightened against the side of the sa me, securing the plate upon it. By this construction the support for the rowing-gear is considerably simplified, as Well as made considerably stronger and more durable, the perforated upright lugs being cast in one piece with the base-plate, being considerably simpler and stronger in construction than two upright perforated posts having their lower shouldered ends passed through the upper portion of the gunwale and secured by means of nuts upon theirlower ends hearing against the under side of the gunwale.

By having the perforatedlips and the clamp ing bolts and screws the base-plate may be adjusted to different sizes of gunwales and the support of the rowing apparatus, and thus the entire apparatus maybe removed, when desired, by simply loosening the clampingscrews, when the base-plate may be removed.

The split keyin the pivot-bolt will retain it in the perforated lips as securely as a nut, and may be removed in a moment of time, when the said pivot-bolt may be removed and the bottom plate, with its gear, lifted from between the upright lips.

The base plate having the clampingbolts and the perforated lips provided with the clampingscrews will enable the rowing appara us be moved to any place upon the gunwale of the boat, bringingit in a convenient position to all seats in the boat, and the two adjustable pairs of clamping-lips will enable the plate to fit at any curve of the side of the boat and to be secured as firmly upon the curved portion of the gunwale as upon a straight portion.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- In a rowing apparatus, the combination of a base-plate having the rowing-gear secured to its upper side, and having transverse thread ed eyes at its ends and downwardly-projecting perforated lips under the eyes, screw-threaded clamping-bolts having their heads formed into clamping-lips and having their ends fitting in the threaded eyes at the ends of the plate, and the clampingserews fitting in the perforated lips at the ends of the plate, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
