Description

\ A. ERMAN.
CLAMP.
APPLICATION FILED FEB- !3. 1915.
Patented Nov. 2, 1915.
7 AUGUST ERMAN, OF POCATELLO, IDAI-IQ' CLAMP.
Application filed February 18, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUoUs'r EnMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pocatell0, in the county of Bannock and State of Idaho, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to clamps designed for cooperation with the bed plate of a dull press, planer or similar machine, to securely clamp the material in position thereon.
v The applicant contemplates certain improvements over the structure of a similar device for which Patent No. 1,093,554 was issued to him on March 19, 1914:.
The improvements reside in the provision of a structure possessing increased strength, and one which can be easily and quickly adjusted to clamp the material upon the bed plate of the machine.
The invention resides in the specific construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawing forming part of this ap plication like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the manner of clamping a piece of work upon the bed plate of the machine. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the Referring to the drawing in detail 5 indicates the bed plate of the machine upon which the work is supported, and provided with the usual dove-tailed groove 6. Slidably mounted in the groove is a headed end 7 of the bolt 8 upon which is threadedly adj ustable a clamp nut 9, it of course being understood that the contour of the head 7 is such as to prevent rotation of the bolt 8 within the groove. The bolt passes through a longitudinally extending slot 10 formed in the movable jaw 11, the latter being arranged to cooperate with the bed plate 5 for clamping the work thereon.
The jaw 11 comprises spaced parallel members 12 pivotally secured in any suitable manner upon the lug 13 projecting centrally from one side of the clamp 14, the latter being slidably adjustable upon the relatively stationary threadless bolt 15 which has its head 16 fixed within the groove 6 of the bed Copies of this patent may be obtained for Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 8,110.
plate. The clamp 14:is held in any desired adjusted position by means of a screw bolt 17 passed through the spaced ears 18, and having the nut 19 secured on the free end thereof. Surrounding the bolt 17 is. alink 20 to which is secured one end of a chain 21,- .the opposlte end having attached thereto a suitable spanner wrench 22 for loosening and tightening the nut 19 when it is necessary to adjust the jaw 11 upon the bolt 15.
The inner ends of the parallel members 12 r are beveled as at 23 and cooperate with the shoulders 2% of the clamp 14 to allow a slight pivotal movement of the jaw 11 to permit various angular positions of'the latter, and to decrease the strain on the bolt 15 under the clamping action of the nut 9.
It is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art without requiring a more extended explanation, and therefore the same has been omitted.
What I claim is A clamp for a bed plate having a longitudinally disposed groove, comprising a jaw having a slot opening through one end thereof and providing parallel members, a bolt slidably mounted in said jaw, a nut threadedly adjustable on said bolt and disposed above said jaw, a guide bolt rising from the bed plate and adjustable in said groove, a clamp freely slidable on said guide, means for securing said clamp in adjusted position upon the guide, a lug projecting centrally from said clamp and forming beveled shoulders at the opposite sides thereof, said jaw being pivotally mounted upon said lug, and the inner ends of said parallel members of the jaw being beveled to cooperate with said shoulders to permit of a. pivotal movement of said jaw and to decrease the strain upon said guide under act-ion of said nut subsequent to the securing of the clampin ad- AUGUST ERMAN.
