Description

@uiten tatr ilntnnt @frn GEORGE W. HUNT, OF WINOHENDON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO JOB S. GRAY-AND .JOHN S. WATSON, OF SAME PLACE.
`Letters Patent No. 65,083, dated May. 28 1857.
IMPnovBD Doon-STOP.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. HUNT, of Winchendon, in the county of Worcester, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Combined Metallic and Elastic Door-Stop, (which invention I have assigned t0 John S. Watson and Job S. Gray, of the same placeg) and the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had 'to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of the article as it is manufactured for use.
Figure 2 showsthe ,article as attached in place, for the purposes designed.
Theiobject of my invention is a new article of manufacture and trade in the building-hardware line, to be used in the place of blocks or pins of wood, fastened to the floor or mop-board, for doors to strike against as they swing open, to prevent thedOOr-knOb or latch from striking and indenting plastered walls, or making uncouth-looking holes in wall-paper.
My invention consists in casting on to the head and shank of common Wood-screw a handsome scrollshaped shank, with a base to give it'a rm support, and a head, in which to insert any elastic substance, to form a bumper for the door to strike against.
That others may he enabled to make and use my improved door-stop, I will describe it more fully, referring to the drawings, and to the letters marked thereon.
The scroll-shank A may be made of any desired length, and of any ornamental shape or design. The head B is cast with an opening or socket, b, in the end, in which to insert and secure a bumper, c, of some elastic substance, such as cork, India rubber, felt, or a stripped ball of wool or cotton. The base D ofv the metal stop may` be of any desired ornamental configuration, the face d being flat, so as to tit closely to any plane surface to which it is fastened by thesingle wood-screw e. ,y
A-cominon gimlet-pointed wood-screw is placed inthe sand mould, and the metal stop, when cast, surrounds the head and so much of the shank of the screw as is desired, thus forming a very cheap, substantial, and expeditious mode of fastening. Thus it will be seen that a cheaper, more durable, needful, and better article for the purpose can be supplied than has been heretofore known or used.
,I am aware that spring-bumpers and padded blocks and pins have been used for thepurpose of preventing door-knobs and latches from injuring plastered and papered walls, and also to prevent doors from making a great noise or being injured by the jar when swung back, and I do not claim broadly the use of elastic substance applied in any manner for and to eil'ect the purpose.
But what I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, as a new article of manufacture and trade, is
A combined metallic and elastic door-stop, constructed substantially in the manner herein described, for
the purposes set forth.
GEO. W. HUNT.
