Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. REAG-AN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, (New Brighton,) in the county of Rich mend and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Tie or Fastening for Bags, Packages, and the Like, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is the production of a tie or fastening for bags, packages, and analogous articles which shall be simple in construction, cheap in first cost, and of great strength, which can quickly and easily be adjusted in position and with'equal facility removed, When so desired, which shall be provided with a loop at or near one end through which the opposite end can be passed, which, further, shall be provided with means about which the free end thereof can be wound,which shall have means adapted to receive and hold a tag, and which, finally, shall constitute a superior device for performing the necessary and required functions.

With the above ends in view my invention consists, objectively, in a wire bent upon itself at one end and twisted to form a loop bent upon itself midway of or between its ends and twisted to form a second loop and coiled at the other or free end upon itself, so as to cover or shield the point of the wire.

It further consists in a wire provided with a loop at one end, a coil at the opposite end, and a loop in the body of the Wire between the ends adapted to receive and hold a tag.

The accompanying drawings illustrate an example of the physical embodiment of my invention formed and constructed according to the best mode 1 have so far devised for the application of the principle.

Figure 1 represents a bag with my improved tie applied thereunto for the purpose of holding the open end or mouth thereof closed. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the tie detached or removed from the bag, also showing a tag secured to a loop. Fig. 3 is a View of the tie as it appears normally before its application to a bag or analogous article.

Referring to the several views, the letter A designates a bag having its mouth held closed by a tie, B the tie as a whole, consisting of a piece of wire of any suitable diameter and length, and G is a tag secured to a loop formed in the body of the tie.

To fashion the tie, one end of the wire is, first, turned upon itself through an arc of one hundred and eighty degrees and then twisted about the adjacent body ofthe same at a, so as to form a loop I) of any desired shape and size; secondly, the opposite or free end a is coiled upon itself, preferably in the same plane, so as to cover or shield the point and retain it in such a position relative to the coil that it will not engage and penetrate or inj ure any object with which the end may come in contact; thirdly, the wire is bent upon itself midway of the ends and twisted at d to form a loop e, as clearly shown in the several figures, and, finally, when so desired, a second loopf may be formed in the body of the wire of the same shape as loop e or differing therefrom in form and dimensions.

To apply the tie or fastening, the same is first adjusted to encircle the bag or analogous article which is to be held or confined, next the end 0 is passed through the loop I), and finally the said end 0 is wound around the twisted portion d adjacent the loop 6, which is located some distance from the end a of the tie. A tag may be secured to the loop 6, as shown, or an additional loop f may be provided for that purpose.

From the foregoing description it is obvious that I have produced a tie or fastening which fulfils all the conditions hereinbefore set forth as the purpose or object of my invention. Besides possessing the desired features of cheapness, strength, simplicity, and facile adjustment and release, the tie is also adapted for secure attachment by means of the end 0 being wound around the twist cl of the loop, where it is held without automatically unwinding,the wire being of soft metal, the loop preventing the coils from slipping off and the said loop itself in turn being held so that it cannot untwist when the tie is drawn taut, and finally the point of the same at the end 0 is effectively protected, so as to prevent injury to any object with which the end may come in contact.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
