To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL HAHN, a cit-izen of the United States, residing at Moscow, in the county of Museatine and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ties, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to tie fasteners.
lvIy primary object is to simplify and cheapen the manufacture of tie fasteners and provide a fastener adapted to simple or compound ties of twine or cord.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a top plan view of the preferred form of my invention with a cord secured thereto, Fig. 2 is a similar view partly in section showing the arrangement of the interior of the spiral, Fig. 3 is an end view of the interior of the spiral.
The tie fastener preferably comprises a single piece of wire bent to form a loop and two gripping slots C and C and terminating in a spiral coil A, formed by a plurality of turns of the wire.
The method of operation is as follows: An ordinary cord F is knotted at one extremity E, the end without a knot is passed through the spiral A, the knot is caught at E which is a slot or hook formed with one end of the wire forming the fastener. The cord is passed about the package to be held and is looped about the package in the ordinary manner. When the package is sufficiently bound, the extremity of the cord is caught in the gripping slot C or C as is most convenient. The tension of the cord when the fastening is complete is in opposition to the tension exerted at the knotted end of the cord, which opposition tends to draw the string or cord more and more tightly within the gripping slots as is exhibited by the position of the cord in Figs.

gripping slots is to afford equal facility in the manipulation by right and left handed persons.
One of the principal advantages that results from this form of fastener is the cheapness of construction, it being made from a single piece of wire conformed to the shape shown and described.
Another advantage is in the resiliency of the device and the flexibility afforded by the construction of the spiral A.
It is obvious that various ways of passing the cord about the package may be employed and that the shape of the fastener may be variously modified without departure from my invention.
What I regard as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A tie fastener formed from a single piece of wire and comprising a base portion in loop form, the ends of the loop being inturned to form inwardly directed open loops, and a coil at the side of the base portion and opposite the mouths of the inturned loops to assist in closing the same.
2. A tie fastener formed from a single piece of wire and comprising a base portion in loop form, the ends of the loop being inturned to form inwardly directed open loops, a coil at the side of the base portion and 0p posite the mouths of the inturncd loops to assist in closing the same, the end of the wire being continued from one of said inturned loops to form a loop partly within the coil to retain permanently the knotted end of a cord.
