HAnNEss ArrAci-IMeNr.
srncirrcnrroiv forming part of Letters Patent are. 650,703, dated m 29, 1900.
Serial No. 7283615. (No infidel.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWIN T. BASED? and ALFRED SHEPHERD, citizens of the United States, residing at Malta Bend, in the county of Saline and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvments'in Harness; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same;
Our invention relates to a new and useful improvement in harness, more particularly to the hooks and terrets and the means for fastening the same; and its object, among other things, is to provide hooks and terrets of peculiar construction whereby lines may be quickly placed and retained therein; also, to provide a strong, durable, and eflicient fastening for said rings, (lac.
To these ends the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of our invention, and in which- Figure 1 is a detail View of a terret, its washer, and fastening devices assembled. Fig. 2 is a view of a hook and its washer, showing the parts detached. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views of modified forms of terret and hook.
Referring to said figures by letters of reference, A is a terret formed from a rod of suitable metal bent into a substantially-circular or other form, with its ends passing each other and then bent toward each other in opposite directions at right angles to the plane of the terret, as at A. These ends A are arranged preferably so as not to contact with each other and are preferably provided with knobs a. The terret is shown permanently fixed to the screw B, projecting through a washer G and a nut D, adapted to be secured to a harness-pad. The lower portion of the ring A is adapted to be seated within a recess 0 in washer 0 when the screw is tightened. The nut D is preferably of the form shown, having a split pin D extending from each end, said pins each adapted to project through the pad and then spread apart, obviating the necessity of using rivets.
In Fig. 2 we have shown a terret E, embodying many of the features hereinbefore described. This terret is provided with a hook portion E E and an upwardly-projecting arm E the ends of both being bent in opposite di rections and overlapping, as shown. It is ob vious that by this construction of terret a line may be quickly inserted therein without necessitating the unbuckling thereof and when once within the terret cannot be removed therefrom without bending the line or strap out of the line of the strain thereon and then slipping it between the ends of the ring. It will be seen that when the terret is placed under unusual strain the ends will close up and strengthen each other. Also by fasten ing the terrets by means of a hook, as here I inafter shown and described, they may be readily removed and replaced without entirely removing the screw.
While this invention is especially adapted for terrets or hooks, We do not limitit thereto, as the same can be used effectively on snap-hooks, hames, &c.
In Figs. 3 and 4 the terret and hook are shown shaped or reduced at a point A intermediate their length, forming shoulders a and upon this shaped or reduced portion in termediate the shoulders is adapted to bear a hook B, formed upon the end of a screw B, adapted to pass through a washer O and a nut D, secured to the harness-pad. The end of this hook B is adapted when the screw is tightened to become seated within a slot 0 in washer O, the ring being drawn into and held within a second slot 0 arranged within the washer O at right angles to slot 0.
In the foregoing description we have shown the preferred form of our invention; but we do not limit ourselves thereto,as we are aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and we therefore reserve the right to make such changesas fairly fall within the scope of our invention.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A hook or terret of the character described having arms which are bent in oppo site directions and overlap each other, sub stantially as described.
2. The combination of a fastening-screw In testimony whereof we aliix our signaand a hook, a washer having two slots or detnres in presence of two Witnesses.

ing, the hook and the mounting adapted to ALFRED SHEPHERD. 5 be seated and interlocked in said slots or de- \Vitnesses:
