Description

Patented May 29, |900. J. F. BARR. CLOTHES LINE suP'PonT.
I (Application filed. Sept. 5, 1899;) @No Model.)
A Y UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES F. BARR, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
CLOTH ES-LINE SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 650,446, dated May 29, 1900.
Application iiled September 5, 1899. Serial No. 729,489. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, JAMES FRANCIS BARR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clothes-Line Supports,of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
My invention has for its object the provision of a clothes-line or other support which may be secured in the soil and removed therefrom with facility, so as to leave no obstruction to interfere with other operations, such as lawn-mowing, which it may be required to perform on the same ground.
Said invention consists of means hereinafter fully described.
In the annexed drawing the figure represents a side elevation of my improved support, illustrating the support fixed in the soil and the base With the standard removed, leaving only the base in the soil, the supporting earth or soil being shown in vertical crosssection.
The device consists of a tubular base portion A, formed with a central bore or opening, whose lower portion is closed and tapered, whereby it may be easily driven into and supported in an upright position in. the soil or earth in which it is placed. Near the lower portion of said base portion is an aperture a, communicating with the interior and through which any water findin g its way into said base may be drained out.
The standard B is constructed so as to easily enter and be removed from the base A, and on the removal thereof the opening at the outer end of said base may be closed' by a cap or cover C, hinged to a shoulder c, shrunk upon the outer surface of said base, the base when closed being shown in the right-hand side of the figure in therrdrawing. The base is driven to a depth su Hieient to bring the top of the cover or cap C about level with the surface of the adjacent soil when such cap isin its closed position, thereby presenting no obstruction on the surface of the ground.
The shoulder c extends transversely from i two sides of the base in the direction of the strain exerted upon the standard by the line secured thereto, and thereby prevents the base from becoming easily dislocated or loosened by creating a resistance to movement in the same or opposite direction of such strain.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means covered by either of the following claims be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention- 1. A clothes-line support consistingof a tubular base adapted to be secured in an upright position in soil or earth and provided at its top with an opening, and a standard adapted to be seated in said base, the latter provided with a transverse shoulder secured toits upper portion and a cover hinged to said shoulder and adapted to close the opening in said base, substantially as set forth.
2. A clothes-line support consisting of a tubular base adapted to be secured in an upright position in soil or earth, provided with a transverse shoulder, having in its upper portion an opening and provided with a hinged cap or cover secured to said shoulder for closing said opening, its lower portion being closed, tapered and provided with a lateral aperture through its wall communicating with the interior of said base, and a standard adapted to be loosely seated in said base, whereby it may be easily removed, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 28th day of August, 1899.
l J. F. BARR.
