TOOL FOR EXTRACTING WELL-POINTS.

Be it known that l, BERTUs G. HORLING, a. citizen of the United States of America, residing at Coo-persville, in the county of Ottawa and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools for Extracting Vell-Points; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in tools for extracting well points and other articles from tubular or driven wells, and its object is to provide a more eective device for the purpose; to provide a device whereby the point or other article to be removed from the well or placed therein can be more elfectually hammered than heretofore; to provide a device in which the rod or tube used to extend within the well is used as a hammer; to provide means whereby blows can be struck upon the article to be removed either upward or downward at pleasure, and to provide the device with various new and useful features hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
My device consists essentially of a rod or tube adapted to be inserted in a well and provided with a member adapted to be attached to the article to be removed from the well, and a rod attached to the rod or tube slidable in the said member and having shoulders to engage the respective upper and lower ends of the same, whereby the rod or tube and parts attached may be utilized to strike hammer blows upon either end of the said member, and in various features of construction and arrangement, as will more fully appear by reference to the accompanying drawings in which:

My device in the form shown consists of a screw threaded and tapered plug 4 adapted to be screwed into the coupling 3 at the top of the well point after the pipe has been removed therefrom.
5 is preferably a solid metallic rod angular in cross section (preferably square) and longitudinally slidable in an angular open ing extending vertically through the plug. By making this rod angular, the plug can be rotated to screw it into a coupling located within the well and thus otherwise inaccessible, or a coupling may be placed on the plug and this coupling rotated to engage the thread on the end of a pipe located in a well and thus otherwise inaccessible. rThis rod 5 is of suitablelength to permit of a proper vertical movement of the device,-
whereby it will deliver a vigorous blow to the plug 4 and parts attached thereto. This is accomplished by providing shoulders 6 and 6a at the respective ends of the rod 5, which engage the respective ends of the plug 4 as the device is moved vertically. Extending upward from this device is a rod or tube 8 coupled thereto by a suitable coupling 7. The movable parts of this device are preferably suspended and counterbalanced by a spring 9, whereby the device is supported by the spring and at the same time easily moved vertically from a normally balanced position, and thus can be manually operated either to hammer the lower end of the plug and drive the same upward together with whatever may be attached thereto, or to hammer the same downward to loosen the parts to which it is attached from the surrounding material. By means of the spring the weight of the device is yieldably sustained and the operator able to strike upward or downward with equal facility and is relieved of the effort of supporting the device.
I do not limit myself to the particular adaptation of a plug to be screwed into a coupling; but obviously other means for attaching this part of the device to other articles, such as boring tools and the like, would be within the scope of my invention, as for instance the plug may be inserted in the upper end of a tube, the lower end thereof being open to receive and bring up a sample of the earth at the bottom of the well7 or a coupling may be attached to reof the plug, a rod or tube attached to said ceive the threaded end ot' a pipe or other slidable rod and extending` upward, and a device. spring attached to the same to yieldably That I claim is support the movable parts of the device.
