PATENT OFFICE.
STEPHEN L. WHITEHEAD, OF NORTON, VIRGINIA.
LABEL-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters iPatent No. 648,603, dated May 1, 1900. Application filed January 31,190 0. Serial No. 8,514. N0 mod l) To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN L. WHITEHEAD,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Norton, in the county of Wise and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Label-Holders; and Ido hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to means for boldin g labels in a pile in convenient form and position to admit of one label at a time being secured withoutdisplacement of the remainder. The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device for the purpose aforesaid which will involve a simple construction capable of easy manipulation, so as to admit of the labels in pile being readily place-din position and withdrawn when required and which will not be susceptible of derangement. and will be effective in operation and satisfactory in result.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction'oflthe means for effecting the result reference isto be had to the following description and the'drawings hereto attached.
NVhile the essential ahd characteristic features' of the invention are necessarily'susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of a labelholder specially designed for attaining the object of this invention. longitudinal section showing the manner of operation, the dotted lines showing the retainer about in the position which it will occupy when turned aside to admit of a pile of labels being placed in position. view of the device inverted.
I Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The'body l of the holder is depressed in its labels to project upwardly to be conveniently Fig. 2 is a' vertical Fig. 3 is a secured to the body 1.
from the device to be attached to the article or package or for any other desired purpose.
A stop 3 is located at one corner of the body, and its inner wall curves and merges into'the depression 2, as most clearly indicated in Fig.
grasped when it is required to remove them 5, adjacent to the stop 3, is beveled toward the base of'the body'l, so asto facilitate the grasping of the labels when the latter are removed. In order to prevent-lateral displacement of the labels, side pieces 6 project from the depressed side of the body in parallel relation and have their upper or outer edges depressed, as shown at 7, to admit of the retainer-support clearing the same when the pile of labels is diminished in bulk. side pieces 6 may form a part of the body or These be separate from it and attached'thereto, the
latter construction being preferred, as it admits of the body- 1 being formed of wood and the side pie'ces'G' constructed of sheet metal oro ther' suitable material. The cornerportion of the' side' 6 adjacent to the beveled corner 50f the body is cut away, as shown at 8, to admit of the labels being more convenientlyv reached and grasped. A
The retainer forholding the labelsto the body 1 is spring-actuated and preferably consists of a roller 9, which admits of the labels being withdrawnwithout subjecting-them to strain sufficient totear or otherwise injure them. Spring'arms 10, located at the sides ofthe body, support the roller 9, and the latter is positioned about centrally of the depression 2. These arms 10 may be attached to, the body in any convenient way and, as shown, they have pivotal connection with the side pieces 6, the portion 11 intermediate of the bearings being deflected to form a crank 11, to which one end of a retractile spring 12 is attached, the other end of the spring being The purpose of the spring 12 is to cause the roller 9to press upon the pile of labels with sufficient force to hold them in place. The lower side of the body 1 is recessed, as shown at 13, to receive the spring 12 and the crank 11', said parts being extend from the openings 15 and form points 17, which normally close the outer sides of the slots 14 and retain the arms 10 in place.
When assembling the parts, the points 17 are bentlaterally, so as to clear the slots 14, thereby admitting of the arms 10 and crank 11 being placed in position, after which the said points 17 are returned to a normal position and close and overlap the slots 14 and retain the arms in place.
When placing a pile of labels 18 in position, the roller 9 is lifted, so as to admit of the labels beingplaced between it and the body, and after the labels have been properly positioned the roller is released and, exerting a pressure upon the labels, holds them in place and depresses them centrally,as shown in Fig. I
2, with the end portions extending upwardly.
When it is required to secure the labels, the topmost one is grasped between the thumb and finger and Withdrawn from beneath the roller, asindicated in Fig. 2, the remaining labels being prevented from following the label being extracted by reason of contact of their ends with the curved wall 4 of the stop 3. Vhile it is contemplated to connect the arms 10 with the body of the holder in anymanner so as to admit of the attainment of the desired end, yet the construction shown I is preferred, as the crank ll can be disposed to act in conjunction with the spring 12 to hold the roller 9 either upon the labels or out of the Way when placing a pile of labels in p0- vsition, as indicated by the dotted lines in s Fig. 2.
' It is to be understood in practice that the holders will be provided in different lengths and widths, according to the size of labels to be supported, and the device may be constructed solely of wood or metal, or a combination of the t-wo,as found most advantageous.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
