Patented Der. 3ft, 191i 2.
Application filed September 1G, 191C. Serial No. 582,428.
,To allwhom it may concern:
Beit known that I, .lanes il". tltloxnon. citizen of the United States, residing` at lll Reno, in the county of Canadian and State of @idaho-ma, have invented certain new and useful lmprtwements in' (llethos-Hann lling implements, ot which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to in'iploments for handling clot-hes during' laundry operations. and commonly known as clothes sticks]7 and has for one of its objects to improve the construction and increase the etlicieney and utility of'devices ot this character.
Another object of the invention is to produce a simply constructed device whereby the clothes may be tirxniy gripped by means operative at a relatixely remote distance from the hot water, so that no danger exists of the operator being scolded thereby.
With these and other objects in View the invention consist-sin certain novel features o t construction as hereafter shownV and described Dand then speciiieally pointed out in the claim, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a perspective View oi' the improved implement in closed or engaged position; 2 is a side View, ot' the improved implement in open or inoperative position; Fig'. t5 is a perspective 'View of the cam supporting clip detached.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the viewsl of the aocon'ipanying drawing', by the samereerence characters.
The improvedelothes stick :formingl the subject matter of the present invention con prises spaced clamping iaws l() and 11 having their upper ends redined to torni handle. sections, the inner faces oi' which are adapt ed to engage a wedge-shaped filling1 block or stock l2, the parts beingv rigidly united in any suitable manner. a,4 shown. The side walls et' the stock or filling` bloei: l2 diverge .in the direction o't' the jaws 1t) and ll so as to space the jawsapart a greater .distan-:fe at their free ends than at their points ot' attachrnent to said stock.
Thus it will be seen that the reduced ends of the jaws 10 and ll. together with theE fillingblock or stock l2. t'orm in eltect an operating handle.ythe side walls ot' the handle sections beingl preferably eoncaved to produce a hand grrip. PermanentlyY secured to one of the jaws. tor instance, the jaw 10, is a clip for supporting an operating' cam, whereby the free ends of the jaws may be tightly conunesscd to hold the clothesI between them. and the constriuftirm ot this clip is one otA the novel features ot' the present invention.
Theclip is in'eferably stamped or otherwise formed from a single sheet ot metal and comprises a hollow substantially rectangular body portion. the inner face 13 of Which bears against the outer face ot" the jaw 10, While the side Valls .lllot the body portion 'bear against the adjacent edges of the jaw 10 and are reduced and extended longitudinally to form'spaced arms 15. The free ends ot' the arms 15 embrace the adjacent longitudinal edges ofthe jaw 11, While the terminals thereof project longitudinally beyond the outer face of the jaw 11 and are provided with perforations for the reception of a pivot pin 16, on which is .mounted an operating lever 17.
The material at the side walls 14 is out to form incisions parallel with the arms 15, and the .material at said incisions bent inwardly above and below the arms 15 to produce inwardly projecting tongues 18, the ends of which are bent laterally and sharpened to torni spurs 19 adapted to be driven into the inner face of the jaw 10, thus to permanently secure the clip in position on the jaw 10 and preif'ent accidental displace nient of said clip when removing garments from a tub or other receptacle. One end of the lever 17 is provided with a finger piece,
while the other end thereof is provided with.
a cam surface 90 adapted to beaiwatlgainst the outer face ot theI jaw l1, thus to `force the free ends of said jaws inwardly into engage nient with a L(garment when it is desired to remove the latter from a receptacle. The parts 10. y11 and 12 are preferably formed ot hard wood, While the jaws 10 and 11 are preferably tapered. toward their free ends to increase their resiliency. f
Thus it will be seen'that by placing the hollow body portion or clip in position on one ot the :lampingl aws of the clothes stick and pressing the spurs or teeth 19 thereof into engagement with the wood. the clip will be perl'uanently secured to said jaw so as to prevent the clip from sliding,r longitudinally (sov , jaws, a clip comprising on said jaw and falling in the hot water in a boiler or other receptacle in which the clothes are placed.
Having thus described the invention, whatl is claimed as new is:
A clothes stick having spaced clamping a hollow substantially rectangular bod portionhaving its inner face bearing against the outer face of one of the jaws and its side Walls reduced Yand extended longitudinally to form spaced arms bearing against the front and rear edges of the other jaw and having their free en s projected longitudinally beyond the outer face of said other jaw, the materialVM forming the si'de walls of the clip being bent inwardly above and below the arms to produce oppositely disposed tongues termimating in angular spurs adapted to be driven into the inner face of the first mentioned jaw for permanently securing the clip in position thereon, and an operating lever pivotally mounted between the projecting ends of the arms and having one end thereof provided with a finger piece and its other end formed with a cam surface adapted to engage the outer face of the adjacent clamping jaw for forcing said jaws into enga ement vwith a garment.
