Description
Nov. 3, 1925 C. M. ALLEN sxm'r PLAN. uowna' Filed Nov. 26. 1924 BY 2 E f...
ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 3, 1925.
UNITED STATES CARRIE M. ALLEN, 0F LOMPOC, CALIFORNIA.
SKIRT PLAIT HOLDER.
Application filed November 26, 1924. Serial No. 752,485.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CARRIE M. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lompoc, in the county of Santa Barbara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skirt Plait Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to devices for holding material, more particularly plaited material, accurately .in place on an ironing board.
The object of the invention is to produce an effective yet inexpensive means for holding the material in place upon the bosom board, so as to permit the workman to press the same without having to pin or otherwise prepare the material before pressing.
Another object is to provide a means adaptable for use in connection with ironing boards for holding materials generally during a pressing operation, particularly materials which are to be accurately creased, such as trousers.
lVith the above mentioned and other ob jects in view, the invention consists in the novel holder and in its construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and set forth in the claim hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claim may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, illustrating my invention:-
Figure l is a top plan View showing three of the holders in position upon an ironing board.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of one of the holders.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the holder showing in dotted lines the clamp bar and spring.
Figure 4 is a side elevation of a modified form of clamp bar.
In the drawings, wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts, 1 indicates an ironing board upon which is placed the material 2, to be held for pressing or creasing. 3 is a flat strip or bar,
preferably of crucible steel, of greater length than the width of the board, and having one of its ends 4 bent downwardly. This downwardly extending portion 4 is provided with an aperture 5 through which is adapted to pass a rod 6.
The rod 6 carries at one end a clip 7, made of any suitable material. The outer end of the rod 6 is provided with an aperture 8 through which is adapted to pass a ring 9, the purpose of said ring being to provide a gripping member whereby the rod 6 may be pulled outwardly. A spring 10 is carried by said rod and held in position between the clip 7 and the downwardly ex tending portion 4 of the bar 3. The other end of the steel bar 3 carries a clip 11, held to the underside of the bar by means of a loose rivet 12. Due to the loose manner of attachment to the bar 8 this clip 11 will swivel to suit the taper of the board. The clips 7 and 11 are adapted to hold the bar 3 firmly down upon the surface of the ironing board 1 preferably by having their lower ends inwardly inclined so as to grip the lower edge of the board.
In Fig. i. a modified form of a clip is shown. In this form the end of the clip rod (3 is split as at 13, thus producing the forks 14- and i l which can be bent backward to grip the lower edge of the board 1.
"it will be observed that when in use the work holder, due to the long stroke of the rod 6, is adapted for engaging the sides of ironing boards either at their wide or narrow ends, and while not essential, it is desirable when using the work holder to utilize several of the same disposed at spaced points throughout the length of the board.
I claim A work holder for ironing boards comprising a holding member adapted to lie upon the surface of the board, and angularly bent at one end, a clip carried by the other end of said holding'member and extending angularly therefrom in the same direction as the angularly bent portion and adaptedto engage the edge of said board, a rod reciprocably mounted within the angularly bent portion of the holding member, a second clip carried by the end of said rod, a spring coiled about the rod and bearing on the second clip and angularly bent portion of the rod, said clips converging downwardly toward each other.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
CARRIE M, ALLEN.
